Prom Mom
Prom Mom: A Novel | Laura Lippman
10 posts | 12 read | 10 to read
New York Times bestseller Laura Lippman tells the story of Amber Glass, desperately trying to get away from her tabloid past but compulsively drawn back to the city of her youth and the prom date who destroyed everything she was reaching for. Amber Glass has spent her entire adult life putting as much distance as possible between her and her hometown of Baltimore, where she fears she will forever be known as "Prom Mom"--the girl who allegedly killed her baby on the night of the prom after her date, Joe Simpson, abandoned her to pursue the girl he really liked. But when circumstances bring Amber back to the city, she realizes she can have a second chance--as long as she stays away from Joe, now a successful commercial real estate developer, married to a plastic surgeon, Meredith, to whom he is devoted. The problem is, Amber can't stay away from Joe. And Joe finds that it's increasingly hard for him to ignore Amber, if only because she remembers the boy he was and the man he said he was going to be. Against the surreal backdrop of 2020 and early 2021, the two are slowly drawn to each other and eventually cross the line they've been trying not to cross. And then Joe asks Amber to help him do the unthinkable...

Beach day here in Florida. Ran by the library on my way to the beach and picked this one up.

This was a slow burn thriller ripped from the headlines. Amber and Joe are high school sweethearts and prom night is meant to be an epic night for the couple, and it is but not in the way they expected. The aftermath results in Amber returning to Baltimore to open a gallery, she swears she'll stay away from Joe, but that's just one promise she's not able to keep. I enjoyed this read, I love stories that have their root in some truth. 🌟🌟🌟✨

This is a character-driven novel instead of a thriller. Readers will enjoy it more if they don‘t expect thrills! An infamous “prom mom” returns to her hometown just before the (real life) pandemic and gets reconnected with her prom date. You know something bad is going to happen but how it ends up is a surprise. Everyone in this book is troubled and I was curious about what they‘d do under pressure.

I usually love Lippman's books, but this one was slow and lackluster until the end, but then the ending seemed rushed. Maybe I just missed something along the way.

THRILLER - MYSTERY

Prom night didn't turn out the way Amber would have wanted it to turn out.

PROM MOM is a slow build up with mostly unlikable characters, especially Joe, and a plot that makes you wonder where this story line is going.

After another #Aardvark playlist deep dive, I'm pretty convinced that this is a likely choice. The lyrics include themes of infidelity, lingering anger, returning home, death, and one whole song legit about a vibrator ? - what I'm dubbing the "vibrator song" struck me as a fit for a woman that's been hiding from her tabloid past (having been accused of killing her baby on prom night) and must not have an active dating life. Love the music clues!

Cinfhen Oh wow!!! Your skill set is FANTASTIC!!! 10mo
Cinfhen The only playlist (#5) that made sense to me was your guess about 10mo
swishandflick @Cinfhen Ugh, based on the new clue today, I think I got this one wrong. Can't win em all I suppose. Now it's looking more likely to be 10mo
Cinfhen I haven‘t seen the new clues yet but Rachel Incident makes sense too!! And I still stand by my statement…. Your sleuthing skills are the BEST!!! 10mo
