panAwful. Mostly nonsensical. Great idea but horrible execution. I read 150+ books a year and this is bottom 5 of all time for me. Our book club of 8 people (very different people btw) hated this book unanimously.

I just started this last night and I'm absolutely loving it so far!
so-soDark academia/fantasy YA told through dual-POV chapters. Emory survived an initiation into a secret society she was never supposed to know about, when all the true initiates drowned. It awakened a new, powerful, and frightening magic in her, which she wants to harness to undo some of that terrible night. She gets in over her head (pun intended) and doesn‘t know whom to trust. It needed paring down and copyediting but has promise.
Sigh. Now it‘s this, one of my pet peeves. Reluctant and reticent aren‘t interchangeable, you know, and I feel like someone in the editing process should know that, even if the author doesn‘t.

pickTold between the POV's of Emory and Baz, this is an excellent start to a new series of dark academia books. Curious Tides weaves together moon cycles, sea legends and magic at a school of young students navigating the world and their powers. Lots of romantic tension, intrigue and just a good slate of character make this a fun read and what I consider the best parts of a dark school story.
pickI liked it—more rather than less—but it was occasionally wordy (some sections could be skimmed) & the magic system while fascinating was not always as well explained as it could be. All that being said, this story about a girl who is the only survivor of a horrible event, after which she has power far greater than ever before, & the one person who can help her figure out what happened is entertaining & I‘ll read the next installment.
Today‘s library #bookhaul - because I don‘t already have three checked out (Project Hail Mary, In the Woods, and The Late Mrs. Willoughby, only one of which I‘ve even started), have two more on the go, and will be visiting family in Tennessee next week. 🤦🏻♀️
