Lassoing the Sun
Lassoing the Sun: A Year in America's National Parks | Mark Woods
13 posts | 6 read | 8 to read
"In this remarkable journey, Mark Woods captures the essence of our National Parks: their serenity and majesty, complexity and vitality--and their power to heal." --Ken Burns Many childhood summers, Mark Woods piled into a station wagon with his parents and two sisters and headed to America's national parks. Marks most vivid childhood memories are set against a backdrop of mountains, woods, and fireflies in places like Redwood, Yosemite, and Grand Canyon national parks. On the eve of turning fifty and a little burned-out, Mark decided to reconnect with the great outdoors. He'd spend a year visiting the national parks. He planned to take his mother to a park she'd not yet visited and to re-create his childhood trips with his wife and their iPad-generation daughter. But then the unthinkable happened: his mother was diagnosed with cancer, given just months to live. Mark had initially intended to write a book about the future of the national parks, but Lassoing the Sun grew into something more: a book about family, the parks, the legacies we inherit and the ones we leave behind.

I opened this today because it was within reach, even though I‘m in the middle of two other nonfiction books. Thought I‘d read the prologue and get back to it later. But wow. I‘ll need to finish this first. If you believe in National Parks and find your spirituality in nature, you‘ll want to reach this. #AllTheFeels

First book of 2022! I always hated camping as a kid, but I really want to do it now. This book is inspiring to pack up and go see the national parks like tomorrow. 🏕

A good book to listen to while I was ironing the sheets and pillowcases for the Airbnb. 😀 Woods writes of his trips to and history of a select group of National Parks during a one year period of time. He writes of his family as well. It definitely made me want to stop ironing and hit the road. I loved his appreciation of those who continue to protect the beauty and solitude of the parks. 3.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

saresmoore Sue, ironing sheets and pillowcases is what I call, “above and beyond!” Although, I will confess that I once steamed a dust ruffle for my in-laws. Never again! 6y
Suet624 @saresmoore I know. But no matter what I do, the sheets come out of the dryer all wrinkly! I want the guests to enjoy a smooth sheet. 😂😂 6y

Jeg That‘s good to know. I was actually born in Keene NH . But most of life spent here in Australia. It‘s been over 8 years since I‘ve been back. I‘ll be in the Carolinas in October and was thinking of visiting. I‘m guessing that is a very busy time for you with Fall . 6y

Late post for #junebookbugs! This prompt was hard! I don't have any books with #insects in the title. So I improvised. These are all books where there are likely insects in them because they are about nature! I heard Dan White and Mark Woods talk at TFOB bc I couldn't get into another panel and I was blown away by how amazing their books sounded! I can't wait to read them.

Great book about the National Parks. I love the examination of what the parks mean to families. Truly America's best idea. Recommend to anyone who has ever spent hours in the back of a station wagon as a kid wondering if "we're there yet?" Double recommend if you turned around and did the same thing with your kids. (Pick: looking across to Cape Cod National Sea Shore in April)

Sick as a dog, but my little girl was sweet enough to bring me coffee in bed. Glad it's Mothers Day and I can just stay here. Have a good one all.

Cold and rainy outside. I'm under a blanket doing some armchair travel.
