Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ
Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ | Lew Wallace
Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ is a novel by Lew Wallace and was considered the most influential Christian book of the 19th century. Ben Hur tells the adventures of Judah Ben-Hur, a fictional Jewish prince from Jerusalem, who is enslaved by the Romans at the beginning of the 1st century and becomes a charioteer and a Christian. Running in parallel with Judah's narrative is the unfolding story of Jesus, who comes from the same region and is a similar age. The novel reflects themes of betrayal, conviction, and redemption, with a revenge plot that leads to a story of love and compassion. Mehso-so

This was one of the most popular books in America in the late 19th century. There are shades of The Count of Monte Cristo with a wronged man seeking revenge, but it gets a little lost along the way. Some elements were fascinating, like the chariot race, while others, like an Egyptian love interest, dragged. I loved seeing the story of Christ from an outside POV and his mother & sister‘s healing. I‘m glad I read it, but I wouldn‘t read again.

Been a devastating week from loosening Бабса, my Ukrainian immigrant grandmother. Saw this and snagged it from the house. 1922 book that apears to be based off the older black-and-white movie. My whole family loves the story of Ben-Hur. It‘s rare to come across fabric covered books nowadays. I‘ll have to give this a read later.

Yesterday, I found this amazing book at a local second-hand store. It has wonderful sketches (like the one shown on the right) throughout. Why did I think up until now that Ben-Hur was only a movie???

Kaag I heard it was a book reading about the American civil war, Lew Wallace was a Union general. 3y
SRWCF @Kaag Oh, I didn't know that! How cool! 3y

Pickpick

Although the movie was slightly different, the message of redemption is still the same. It got a bit long in parts, but overall I still enjoyed it.

just found out that my edition of Ben-Hur is a first edition from 1880! there's an inscription in the front (in fountain pen) from 120 years ago. I imagine it had a dust jacket back in the day? 😁

Day 11: Little Free Library. There are no LFLs anywhere near here (searched about a hundred miles) so I'm posting a couple of books I got for free at a library years ago. 🤷🏽‍♀️#riotgrams

My first book for October is my father's old copy of 'Ben Hur', which is a historical and allegorical tale centered around the politics of Roman-Judea around the life and death of Jesus Christ. The book itself has a broken spine, browned pages, and typos all over the place that make it look like it was typed on a very old typewriter. Nevertheless, it /is/ a classic...so let's get to it!

Bailedbailed

This is the second time j have started and bailed on this book. Maybe I should be less ambitious and just pick up the abridged version someday...
