Rogue Male
Rogue Male | Geoffrey Household

1930-something: a professional hunter is passing through an unnamed Central European country that is in the thrall of a vicious dictator. The hunter wonders whether he can penetrate undetected into the dictators private compound. He does. He has the potential target in his sites and is wondering whether to pull the trigger when security catches up with him. Imprisoned, tortured, doomed to a painful death, the hunter makes an extraordinary and harrowing escape, fleeing through enemy territory to the safety of his native England. But that safety is delusive: his pursuers will not be diverted from their revenge by national borders; the British government cannot protect him without seeming to endorse his deed. The hunter must flee society, and he goes literaly underground, like a fox to its earth. The hunter has become the hunted. Geoffrey Households Rogue Male is a classic thriller and a triumph of suspense. Described by Household as a bastard offspring of Stevenson and Conrad, the book is no less remarkable as an exploration of the lure of violence, the psychology of survivalism, and the call of the wild.

Suet624 Darn! I love the storyline of Rogue Male, but I love the title of The Dud Avocado. Groucho Marx said Dud Avocado made him laugh. But the author of Rogue Male said the main character of the novel was trying to stop Hitler and I kind of like that too. So I'll just go with the majority vote. 4y
vivastory @Suet624 Rogue Male does sound really interesting. I have both on my shelves 4y
mklong I also vote 4y
Liz_M I've read The Dud Avocado a few years back. I think in October I will be in the mood for a thriller rather than modernist literature. I vote for 4y
sisilia (edited) 4y
merelybookish I've read The Dud Avocado but will still vote for it because that is how life is these days. 4y
batsy Though Rogue Male sounds really interesting, I'm voting for the book that's long been tbr :) 4y
GatheringBooks I missed this entirely!! 😭😭 i am so glad this book won !! 4y
Theaelizabet @GatheringBooks It should be a fun read—and I‘ll bet we all could appreciate that these days! 4y

Such a good read that even beans on toast won't distract me. Set pre war an unnamed toff is caught about to assassinate a dictator of a European counrty. Left he dead a man hunt ensues across Europe and into the dorset countryside. Started it yesterday afternoon and couldn't put it down - Brilliant 😀

Excellent. Not my usual thing but I thoroughly enjoyed this. Gripping, full of suspense, and brilliantly written. There was also something uniquely English about it that (perhaps unsurprisingly) I found especially engaging.

This was recommended to me by an English bookseller who could not stop raving about it. I started it on a plane ride yesterday. Will probably finish it today. Smart, gripping, extremely well done. Who knew?

Bklover Sounds really interesting. Let us know what you think! 7y

Starting day 2 of @24in48 by finishing book 3. I wish there was an additional category for review - recommend with qualifications. This book is a classic British "hunted man" thriller that was written in 1939. It reads like a period piece, which I loved. I'm a sucker for this genre and enjoy books written during this time period. If this is also your thing..highly recommend.. if it's not?... skip it.. it may bore you toward the end. #24in48
