9 posts | 2 read
From the award-winning writer of American Gods and Coraline, The Sandman is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed graphic novels of all time. Neil Gaimain's award-winning masterpiece set the standard for mature, lyrical fantasy in the modern comics era. Illustrated by an exemplary selection of the medium's most gifted artists, the series is a rich blend of modern and ancient mythology in which contemporary fiction, historical drama, and legend are seamlessly interwoven. In this third volumedrawn by artists Jill Thompson, Vince Locke, Bryan Talbot, and P. Craig RussellDelirium, youngest of the extended family known as the Endless, prevails upon her brother Dream to help find their missing siblin, Destruction, and their quest draws Morpheus into a final, tragic confrontation with his son. Meanwhile, guest artists Michael Allred, Shea Anton Pensa, John Watkiss, Michael Zulli, and more provide the tall tales told on a stormy night at a remarkable inn: the World's End. Collects stories from The Sandman #38-56 and Vertigo Preview #1, including the story arcs "Brief Lives" and "Worlds' End," among others.

Definitely my favourite of the series so far. It wouldn't be a Sandman book if the stories weren't tinged with sadness, darkness, the gruesome, but Delirium's colourful presence in a large story arc, and the somewhat lighter tone of many of the surrounding tales makes it easier to fully immerse myself in the marvelous variety of Gaiman's prodigious imagination, backed by stellar artists.

I suppose if fear of heights wasn't an issue, and I knew the dragon wasn't inclined to eat me, dangling from its mouth provoke a "wheeee!" ?

Eeeeee! It's teeny tiny Dream and Death. I did not expect this story to be this adorable. 😍

I love how the interstitials in graphic novels are often freed from relating directly to the preceding or succeeding story, you get such amazing art from that more open creative space. Especially in the Sandman books.
