Sex, Lies and Sensibility
Sex, Lies and Sensibility | Nikki Payne
6 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
Nikki Payne skillfully spins the tale of a well-known Jane Austen classic and makes it entirely her own. Thoughtful, hilarious, and smolderingly steamy.Kristina Forest, author of The Partner Plot Two sisters roll up their sleeves to run a dilapidated inn but must learn to work with the locals in this deliciously spicy novel inspired by Sense and Sensibility. Theres never a good time to learn you are your fathers secret childespecially not at the reading of his will. With their fathers affairs laid bare and Noras sensible reputation in tatters due to a viral video scandal, she and her free-spirited sister have nothing left but a rustic inn in the middle of nowhere and each other. Whats more, they need to revamp the inn before Labor Day or they lose it all. Nora hasnt even knocked the traveling dust off last seasons designer boots when shes confronted with three problems: 1. She really should have watched more HGTV. 2. She hasnt seen another Black person for miles. 3. A tall, dark stranger has already staked a claim on their property. Native Abenaki eco-tour guide Ennis Bear Freeman has seen hapless tourists come and go. When he spots two pampered city girls at his unofficial headquarters, he expects them to catch a flight out of the inhospitable coastal Maine backwoods within a weeks time. But Nora, turns out, is made of sterner stuff. And as she rolls up her sleeves to breathe new life into the inn, she unwittingly reignites a flood of emotions inside of Bear that he had very intentionally suppressed. Their connection is electric, their desire palpable. But Bears silence about his mysterious past might turn out to be the one thing that sends Nora packing.

I never think too closely about the ethnicity of the characters but this book makes sure you know and repeatedly reminds you. There are plenty of ways to get it across without working so hard to tell the readers. I feel like for many of the points the author was trying to get across could‘ve been conveyed better.

Finished my final Sense and Sensibility adaptation late last night, just in the nick of time! This one is S&S as a spicy romance novel with a dash of HGTV property overhaul and an overwhelming amount of Ferrars' Sense of Duty. I liked the world of this update, and each of the characters had a great modern spin. Brandon was my favorite, even though his role felt greatly reduced. Special shout-out to the Middletons' cameo. NGL I laughed out loud. 😂

eeclayton Brandon seems to be a favourite in each rendition 🙂 3w

I started this but I'm not loving it. Nora is a bit hot-tempered & impulsive, so far not much like Elinor. In fact I was wondering if we were getting this from the perspective of the Marianne character but Nora is the elder & Yanne's actual name is Maryanne so apparently Nora is Elinor. So far Yanne seems a bit bland. I expect a retelling to need to change things to make sense for modern times but I demand the sisters embody sense & sensibility.

bookandbedandtea This has a lot of love on goodreads, so I'm clearly in the minority, but I don't think I'm going to continue. 1mo

bookandbedandtea @Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm glad to discover someone else didn't completely love it! I suspect I may have liked it well enough if it wasn't a retelling but, since it is, I expect to find the characters familiar and was disappointed that they weren't. 1mo
bookandbedandtea @TheBookgeekFrau Thanks! It's one of my favorites 💚 1mo
