Little Girl Who Was Too Fond of Matches
Little Girl Who Was Too Fond of Matches | Gaetan Soucy
Alone with their bullying father on a vast estate, a sister and brother speak a language and inhabit a universe of their own making. When the old man commits suicide, they are forced into contact with the villagers and their cloak of romance and superstition quickly falls away to reveal shocking truths. Balancing naivete with carnality, Soucy employs his signature playfulness, plot twists, and fascination with guilt, cruelty, and violence in a narrative tour de force where nothing is quite what it seems."

This book deserves a review even though it creeped me out to no end. Soucy's surreal writing was a breath of fresh air, since reading the same o' mainstream stuff lately. A sister and brother are raised by their eccentric father and grow up locked away, isolated from the world. But this ain't your Flowers in the Attic story. Oh no. Be prepared to at times enjoy Soucy's unique prose and at others, squirm in discomfort. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

emilyhaldi Ooooohh creepy! 7y

OK this book is...weird to say the least. I thought maybe that it was because of the French Canadian translation. But nope, it's Soucy's writing. Haven't decided if I like it yet. Onwards though! 🤔

Lacythebookworm Sounds interesting and your food looks delish 😋 7y
BooksAndChopsticks Thx @Lacythebookworm 😁. It's steel cut oats with parmesean, olive oil and candied salmon 💕 7y

Pick! This book won‘t appeal to everyone - trigger warnings abound (murder, suicide, incest, disturbing scenes), but if you like a demented, twisted tale, give it a go. The language can be challenging but only adds to the atmosphere of the story. And the film premiered at the Toronto Fim Festival this year.

HotMessJess Hey, incest is so mainstream now, thanks game of thrones! 7y
HotMessJess Omg I just realized how awful that‘s sounds 😐 7y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @HotMessJess HA HA! 😂🤣 I didn‘t even think that came across weird - what does that say about my brain?! 7y
Soubhiville You two just cracked me up @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled and @HotMessJess ! 7y

Just discovered this book! And it‘s on sale today (ebook $1.99). Two children venture off the estate they‘ve never left after their father dies. Their language and concepts of the world are completely skewed. The language and characters‘ interpretations of their surroundings are challenging and unusual. Looks good!!

HotMessJess I love the premise! Let me know how it goes! 7y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @HotMessJess I couldn‘t help myself - already started reading it. It‘s intriguing and weird. I like it so far! 7y

I knew this was a weird book going into it but is it ever! I'm not exactly sure what I think of it yet. I think it is worth a read to see if you love it, hate it or are just dumbfounded like me.

Family dysfunction to the max. After their father commits suicide, siblings raised in total isolation must face past tragedies and interact with the outside world. Bewitching. Lyrical #translation by Sheila Fischman.

Penny_LiteraryHoarders Oh! This is a new one! I just put a hold on it at the library - it's On Order right now. Family dysfunction? Check! Translation by Fischman? Check! Thanks for this! 8y
