Forgotten Sisters
Forgotten Sisters: A Novel | Cynthia Pelayo
7 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
A city's haunted history and fairy-tale horrors converge for two women in an addictive novel of psychological suspense by a multiple Bram Stoker Award-nominated author. Sisters Anna and Jennie live in a historic bungalow on the Chicago River. They're tethered to a disquieting past, and with nowhere else to go, nothing can part them from their family home. Not the maddening creaks and disembodied voices that rattle the old walls. Not the inexplicable drownings in the area, or the increasing number of bodies that float by Anna's window. To stave off loneliness, Anna has a podcast, spinning ghostly tales of Chicago's tragic history. But when Anna captures the attention of an ardent male listener, she awakens to the possibilities of a world outside. As their relationship grows, so do Jennie's fears. More and more people are going missing in the river. And then two detectives come calling. They're looking for a link between the mysteries of the river and what's housed on the bank. Even Anna and Jennie don't understand how dreadful it is--and still can be--when the truth about their unsettled lives begins to surface.

The timeline in this one is confusing, and the lead-up is long and deliberate while the reveal is almost peremptory. I like the Chicago history, and I like what it says about the past sticking with us, but as a ghost story/fairytale retelling/police procedural, it doesn't really work for me.

ImperfectCJ Peremptory isn't quite the right word, but neither is precipitous. Maybe "rushed" is better, it just doesn't sound as fancy. 1mo

Camille says that my fever makes me perfect biscuit-making temperature, but she would prefer if I stopped coughing so much (she and I both!).

CatLass007 Hello, Camille.😻 You are taking such good care of your human. 📚 I have four kitties. Three of them run away when I inhale to sneeze. The fourth, Molly, always comes running to me with a concerned look on her face. She is the first cat I‘ve ever met who likes loud noises. She sits in the window and watches the man mowing the lawn. She loves the vacuum cleaner. She‘s a nut but I love her. How could I not? 1mo

Took a break from reading the tagged (and trying to relax my way out of whatever non-covid illness it is that I have) to enjoy the lights at the botanic garden with my family. Each display was paired with music. It was very cool!

kspenmoll Looks amazing! What a holiday treat! 1mo

From the beginning of this novel, I felt all at sea, but drawn inexorably forward. I didn‘t know who or what to believe. Was this a ghost story? What was real? Who was real? Would it all end in disaster or would we get a happy ending or at least not a tragic one? Wow, I didn‘t see the end coming. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really wanted to like this one—it‘s set in Chicago in a neighborhood I know well—but it never quite came together for me, something I‘ve seen other reviewers say. It‘s ostensible the story of two sisters, an old family home, new love, and a murder investigation—the elements are there but ultimately, it‘s the descriptions of various disasters from Chicago‘s history which prove to be the most interesting part of the story.

Ghost story, murder mystery. More fairy tale than horror. Lovely writing.
