They All Saw a Cat
They All Saw a Cat | Brendan Wenzel
72 posts | 48 read | 9 to read
The cat walked through the world, with its whiskers, ears, and paws . . . In this glorious celebration of observation, curiosity, and imagination, Brendan Wenzel shows us the many lives of one cat, and how perspective shapes what we see. When you see a cat, what do you see? Plus, this is the fixed format version, which looks almost identical to the print edition.

This book was a cute book for children. I love that the book explores how a cat might look from different animals points of view. This would be a great book for teaching children about point of view. I love how the underlying message is that it doesn‘t matter what he looks like to other animals, they all saw a cat!

This is just fantastic.

And I‘m not just saying that because I‘m a cat lover!!

This book has beautiful illustrations and simple writing that will not bore young children and easy enough for beginner readers to read in their own! This is a must for a children‘s library! The cat is displayed how a child, a dog, a fish and so on would view him and how it is different for everyone.

LyndyG This is one of my son‘s favorites! I adore the illustrations! 4y

This is a short cute story about a cat. I think children love books about animals, at least I know I do. It also talks about a bunch of different animals that all saw the cat which is educational for young children. Very cute read.

This is a good read for younger students. There‘s lots of repeating phrases and words, bright fun pictures, and big easy to read words on each page. It uses a lot of animal vocabulary along with artwork of them.

This New York Times Best Seller & Caldecott Honor MF story is about a cat who wanders around and is seen by other animals and a child. They each see him differently. The child sees something sweet and cuddly, the animals see him as food. Then he comes to water and looks at himself, and the story ends before exposing how the cat sees himself.

Summerm This would be best as IR and RA. Using UDL 2.2 (clarify syntax and structure) & 7.3 (minimize threats and distractions) would be best with this story. Also, the EL strategies 11 (place language and meaningful context) & 15 (reinforce the key ideas you present again and again) #ucflae3414su19 5y
galacticbees What a cute book, I definitely need to read this. I love that resource you included, its really great for getting kids to remember events in the story. I love that each person has a different perspective in this story, its great to teach that to children early on. 5y
Summerm 7.3 minimize threats and distractions with this book, can help a lot for young children because that is who this book is aimed for.

15 (remind the students that the story is about a cat, and no matter how people and other animals see him, he is still a cat. Try not to allow them to get confused).

Summerm @galacticbees Totally agree! and it is such a great book. It could be used to engage the class in a great conversation on perspective and judgement. 5y
DrSpalding I had a student story tell this as well! It works! Excellent book selections. 5y

A book that displays observation, curiosity, and imagination. Everything in the world was able to see that cat but in different perspectives because we all see things differently. In the end, the cat saw the cat in the reflection of the water. We see ourselves through mirrored images that displays aspects to who we are. Award: Caldecott Medal; Published: 2016; Illustrator: Brenden Wenzel

This book would be EXCELLENT to show multiple perspectives. While they probably aren‘t accurate to specific animals, the lesson remains that perspectives are different for each person/animal. This could also bring out the conversation of differing opinions and opposing personality traits. Everyone is different, special, and unique!

This book explores the perspective of different animals and how not everyone sees things in the same way. The cat is seen by all, but in completely different ways. Each animal is influenced by their environments and their surroundings. The color also changes depending on what colors the animals can see.

Genevieve is enjoying reading me her school library pick for this week. She almost always seems to check out whichever book the librarian read to the class. She then reads it to me. Her memory is uncanny—I‘m constantly amazed at how she can repeat a book verbatim after only hearing it once!

They All Saw a Cat by Brendan Wenzel, is a F picture book that is great for IR, PR, RA, & S and is a 2017 Caldecott winner! This book tells the story of a cat that walks through the world being viewed by many outsiders who all have a unique perception of what the cat looks like. This book can be used in the classroom to teach students that we can all see the same thing, but perceive it differently.

WendyV Http://www.strudyforcommonthings.com/2016/08/they-all-saw-a-cat-animal-eyesight-activity/ I found this great article that is an extension of how to use this book in the classroom. Students can use any smart device, take a picture, and then change the settings to show how the same image can be perceived differently (UDL 4.2). 6y
WendyV I would use EL strategy 30 with this book to help students identify concepts and see relationships through drawings or diagrams of how the same image can be perceived differently. (They All Saw a Cat read aloud)
