Buried Deep and Other Stories
Buried Deep and Other Stories | Naomi Novik
11 posts | 7 read | 11 to read
A thrilling anthology of thirteen short stories that span the wide-ranging imagination of the New York Times bestselling author of the Scholomance Trilogy, including a sneak peek at the world where her next novel will be set. From the dragon-filled Temeraire series and the gothic, magical halls of the Scholomance trilogy, through the realms next door to Spinning Silver and Uprooted, this stunning collection takes us from fairy tale to fantasy, myth to history, and mystery to science fiction as we travel through Naomi Noviks most beloved stories. Here, among many others, we encounter: A mushroom witch who learns that sometimes the worst thing in the Scholomance can be your roommate. The start of the Dragon Corps in ancient Rome, after Mark Antony hatches a dragons egg and bonds with the hatchling. A young bride in the middle ages who finds herself gambling with Death, for the highest of stakes. A delightful reimagining of Pride & Prejudice, in which Elizabeth Bennet captains a Longwing dragon. The first glimpse at the world of Abandon, the setting of Noviks upcoming epic fantasy seriesa deserted continent populated only by silent and enigmatic architectural mysteries. Though the stories are vastly different, there is a unifying theme: wrestling with destiny, and the lengths some will go to find their own and fulfill its promise.

I absolutely adore Naomi Novik‘s writing. I don‘t know which story was my favorite: “Spinning Silver,” the story that turned into the novel, with quite a bit of the exact same language but a very different ending; “Dragons & Decorum,” which could also be called “Elizabeth Bennet, dragon rider”; or “Castle Coeurlieu,” like a dark retelling of a fairy tale that never existed.

A collection of Novik‘s short stories, including the story that became Spinning Silver and a Temeraire Pride and Prejudice fusion.

I really do adore Novik‘s writing. She has such a gift for scene setting, intriguing characters, & making a tone fit the story. This definitely did its job, because I want to immediately dive into her other books. I put her 1st Scholomance book on hold, double checked I own an audio copy of Spinning Silver.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

DRAGONRIDER ELIZABETH MOTHERFORKING BENNET?!? 🤩🤩🤩

Deifio Is this in the Temeraire universe? 3mo
BookmarkTavern @Deifio Kind of? It‘s a short story that‘s basically Pride and Prejudice if Lizzie was a Captain in the army and a dragon rider. I‘ve only read the first Temeraire books, and I think it stood on its own pretty well. 3mo

Okay, after attending my favorite local indie bookstore's big 10 year anniversary sale this morning, and then meeting someone from Facebook Marketplace for a couple of other books, this is the state of my TBR shelves.

I am now officially on a book buying break, I think I'm going to say until I've finished at least around half of these books.

That's reasonable, right?! 😆

Ruthiella Totally reasonable! 👍 P.S. Nona the Ninth is awesome! 8mo

Novik collects previously published stories along with some new ones in this stellar collection. There were no duds, stories ranged from good to excellent. Lots of fantasy, fairy tales, & alternate history as Novik revisits the worlds of her novels. There‘s also a thought-provoking science fiction story which delves into colonization, the natural world, & war. And there‘s a story set in the world of her next novel. I really enjoyed this one.

Short story collection from Novik up next! And for a bonus, one of the stories is set in Abandon, rhetorical world where Novik‘s next fantasy is set. Excited to dive in.

This collection of short stories by one of my all-time favorite authors is a true, glittering dragon‘s hoard for fans and newcomers alike! Gender-defying pirates, Greek myth retellings, a mushroom witch at the Scholomance, Pride & Prejudice & DRAGONS, Buried Deep has a gem of a story for every fantasy lover—and extra thrilling, it ends on an abandoned continent of architectural mysteries, a sneak peek at the setting for Naomi Novik‘s next series!
