I‘ve seen Littens tag books with a ribbon before the title....how is this done?

Zelma When you add a comment, you will see a little ribbon and skull beneath the comment line. Clicking the skull makes your comment a spoiler. The ribbon leads you to search a book title and allows you to tag a book. 6y

Litsy, I need your advice! I have a new bookshelf so I can spread books out (un-double my shelves). How do you organize your nonfiction? Do you put it all together by author? Do you separate biographies from general history? Am I over-thinking this (yes)?

Thanks in advance!

josie281 I group them! Biographies, research (dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc), biblical studies, science, etc. 7y
RanaElizabeth I think any discussion on how to organize depends on how you would use it. When you go looking for a book, is it easier for you to find if by author or genre? When I have space, I'm a "mostly by genre unless I have a lot of books by an author". So, for instance all of my travel memoirs are together but the exception is Paul Theroux who writes both fiction and non fiction travel. I own probably about ten of his so he has his own shelf. 7y
LauraBeth I group them like @josie281 - reference, history, science, food, religion, biographies, etc 7y

Chelsibno I tend to group them together by subject. I group them by language books, auto/biographies, history, literary studies, religious texts, self-help, parenting, cooking, knitting/sewing, etc. Within each subject, I organize by authors' names. (edited) 7y
underthebelljar I group them by subject first then author. 7y
EllieDottie I do alphabetical by subject, then by year/date! It the way my mind works! 7y
queerbookreader I have a shelf for cookbooks but other than that my shelf organization is by book size, and that's it. You miiiiight be overthinking it a little but most readers I've met (especially on Litsy) have serious organization methods for their books sooooo maybe don't pay attention to me 🙉 7y
OrangeMooseReads I usually group by subject, and then sub-categories if needed (history and then Russian History, US History ...) I keep my biographies/autobiographies with the subject they cover - I keep my Holocaust survivor memoir/autobiographies in with my WWII non-nonfiction. If the biography/memoir/autobiography doesn't fit into another category I group those together. This is also the only category/grouping I will split an author up. 7y
readordierachel I also group by subject (I'm lazy, so I don't bother with organizing by author unless I have a ton of books on that subject), and then by subgenre (e.g., history then books on, say, Russian history grouped together). 7y
ReadingEnvy Subject first, and literary non fiction, especially essay, is filled with memoir 7y

It amazes me that so many of you guys are able to juggle multiple books at once. The most I can ever do at a time is two, and even that is rare. I like to commit to one book at a time and immerse myself in it until it's over. It's interesting getting to know everyone's different reading preferences though! It's such a personal thing.

Megabooks It is. I used to be a one-book woman, but now I'm a two-book woman. Never more than that, though. (Unless you count serial reader.) 8y
courtney I feel the same way! I used to have to read 3-4 novels at once for school and now it feels hard to focus on too many at once 8y
LeahBergen I'm usually reading only one book at a time, too, but I will read two if one is fiction and the other is nonfiction. I sometimes have a "bathtub book" if my current read is a monstrous hardcover that is too unwieldy in the tub! ? 8y

Megabooks @LeahBergen Mine have to be different, too. Usually fiction and non-fiction, but sometimes it's sci fi and a short story collection, for example. 8y
Yournewfriendsams I can only read one too! If I have two going it's usually because there's a bail on the way and I'm just in denial. 8y
CaitlinSiem Monogamist reader here. But agreed, it is fascinating to see how different people read. 8y
manifestsanity Usually if I'm reading two books, I'm not paying close enough attention to one of them. Back burner books almost don't count. 8y
marixa I have to read 4 or 5 at once, and then I pick up whatever calls to me when I have reading time. It's the rare book that I'm willing to be exclusive with 😉 8y
BooksForEmpathy I find that it is so much about mood! I usually start around 2-4 books at a time, but then once I hit the 100 page mark in one of them, I stick with it and usually cannot break to go to a different story because I'm so immersed. It's just the beginning that is hard for me... too many options and it's hard to really commit sometimes! 8y
Simona I always combine nonfiction with fiction. 8y
Notafraidofwords I find this so interesting too. I love reading but the most I can do is two and even that feels weird. If I'm reading two, I bail on one usually. 8y
bookloversnevergotobedalone A friend once told me they treat their books like friends and have many going at once and choose which to read like deciding who they'd like to spend time with at that moment 8y
mauveandrosysky @Ebooksandcooks personally, I would not count Serial Reader. It just feels different somehow haha 8y
mauveandrosysky @courtney right? I just need to focus on one at a time or I'll get confused and forget things. 8y
mauveandrosysky @LeahBergen @Ebooksandcooks that makes sense. I've definitely been known to read a short story collection alongside a novel. 8y
mauveandrosysky @Yournewfriendsams totally, yes! And I hate bailing (just a weird personal thing) so I'll usually force myself to finish before I even pick up another one 8y
mauveandrosysky @CaitlinSiem it is! It's one of my favorite things about Litsy. 8y
mauveandrosysky @manifestsanity yeah that's usually what happens to me if I try to read too many at once 8y
mauveandrosysky @marixa that's so interesting to me! Do you ever confuse plot lines?! 8y
mauveandrosysky @BooksForEmpathy see that approach is so fascinating to me! I love Litsy, haha. Learning new things about everyone/everything all the time. 8y
mauveandrosysky @Simona that seems to be a common approach! 8y
mauveandrosysky @Notafraidofwords if I'm reading two it's usually because one of them is a Big Challenging Book that I'm pacing myself with. Though sometimes I'll do a novel and a short story collection. 8y
mauveandrosysky @bookloversnevergotobedalone that's an interesting approach! I can totally understand why someone would do it like that. 8y
Josie I'm the same way! I recently went back to only one at a time. I find that I read quicker that way! 8y
marixa It must be multi-tasker syndrome or something...once I pick up the book, it's no prob to pick up where I left off. A year later, I might forget the plot but usually I can pick up and put down pretty easily. 8y
mauveandrosysky @marixa I'm seriously impressed! My memory is so bad that I often struggle remembering things even when I do just one book at a time haha 8y
mauveandrosysky @Josie I've found that, too! And it's not like I'm in a rush to finish every book I read or anything, but there are so many books out there that I want to read that I only like to spend a few days on each one. 8y
swishandflick I have to read more than oneat a time because my book club reads SO SLOW, haha. One book a month? Pshhh. Having something other books going helps me pace myself 😂 8y
Hooked_on_books I'm like you--one at a time. If I'm reading a second, it's usually short stories, essays, or certain types of nonfic that I want to page through slowly. Other than that, give me cover-to-cover any day! 8y
mauveandrosysky @Hooked_on_books definitely! 😀👍🏻 8y
mauveandrosysky @swishandflick haha I'm in a book club too and I usually just end up finishing the book on like the second day of the month 😳 8y
reneelyons I usually read about 2 at once - occasionally more! I often have a classic going, an audiobook for my desk or when I'm driving, and then my main read :) 8y
