Rubina has been invited to her first birthday party, and her mother, Ami, insists that she bring her little sister along. Rubina is mortified, but she can?t convince Ami that you just don?t bring your younger sister to your friend?s party. So both girls go, and not only does Sana demand to win every game, but after the party she steals Rubina?s prized party favor, a red lollipop. What?s a fed-up big sister to do? Rukhsana Khan?s clever story and Sophie Blackall?s irresistible illustrations make for a powerful combination in this fresh and surprising picture book.

I really don‘t think I‘d enjoy this story. I don‘t think there is much of a story to follow in this book.

#SpringIntoReading Day 10: This book would resonate with anyone who had to deal with annoying #siblings, and it does demonstrate what it means to ‘share‘ and be part of a family - especially if your mother insists that you bring your younger sister, who happens to be a crybaby, to a party that you are invited to. This is a fictional book & winner of the Charlotte Zolotow award and can be used in the classroom as a RA, AS, IR, SR, or DR. It‘s about a girl named Rubina, who is new to America, from Pakistan. When Rubina is invited to her first birthday party in America, her mother insists that she bring her little sister.

Cruzdia1 UDL Strategies: A UDL strategy that can be applied to this book is 2.4 which is promoting understanding across languages. The bilingual nature of this book makes that very achievable. Some other applicable UDL Strategies are: 3.2, 9.1, 9.2 and 9.3. (edited) 7y
Cruzdia1 Its a must read if you have a little sister, or if YOU are a little sister. This story is very relatable and reminds me a lot of my own younger sister! And a great multicultural text! #UCFLAE3414SP18 //// ESOL Strategy: 24 would be great ESOL strategy to incorporate the culture and the language of second language learners in your class. (edited) 7y
KaitlynN I think this is such a cool book. I‘m excited to read it. It‘s so amazing to me when authors can take an unfamiliar culture, or place, and make it super relatable. I think it would be great to use a book like this in class because, although not all kids know someone from another country, or culture, they can all find a way to relate to having a little sister, being a little sister, knowing someone with a sister, having a younger cousin or friend. 7y
Cruzdia1 Since this book is mainly about two sisters for my teaching resource I provided a link to 20 games to build sibling (or friend!) relationships! https://playtivities.com/activities-for-siblings/ This would be something fun to do after reading this story! 7y

This week's kids' library loot includes a Sasquatch, a reluctant duck, a panda neighbour, a caveboy who wants a puppy, and a rec from a fellow Litten - Big Red Lollipop (thanks @kmdartist ). The plan was to read these for the #readathon on Saturday but of course we already read a third of them last night!

LibrarianRyan So many good books in that pile! 8y

Although the colours aren't as vibrant as I'd hoped for a story like this one, #BigRedLollipop is one of my favourite Canadian #picturebooks, featuring a sweet South Asian family. #RukhsanaKhan #DiverseKidLit #OwnVoices
