Written twenty years after the publication of Casting Off, the final volume of the Cazalet Chronicles begins in 1956 when the death of the family matriarch brings the scattered members of the extended clan back together The death of eighty-nine-year-old matriarch Kitty the Duchy Cazalet marks the end of an eraand the commencement of great change for the family. The long, difficult marriage of second son Edward to Villy has ended in divorce and Edward is contemplating wedlock with his longtime mistress, Diana. Hugh, the eldest son, wounded in the Great War and haunted by the death of his wife, Sybil, has finally found happiness with Jemima Leaf. Rupert, the youngest, who was missing-in-action during World War II, is now committed to rebuilding his relationship with his wife, Zoe. Rachel, who has spent a lifetime looking after others, has the chance to finally live for herselfeven as shes faced with the loss of all she cherishes most. And Home Place, the beloved Sussex estate where the Cazalets have gathered for years, is now a beloved relic that, with its faded wallpaper and leaky roof, has aged along with its occupants, including faithful servants like Mrs. Cripps, Mr. Tonbridge, and former governess Miss Milliment, now steadfast companion to Villy. Elizabeth Jane Howards critically acclaimed family saga comes to its conclusion as the Cazalets reflect on their past and begin the inexorable move forward.

Sad to say goodbye to the cazalets after this final 5th volume which ended on a magnificent finale as Elizabeth Jane Howard describes, in one of the best depictions I've read of a family Christmas, the last gathering at Home Place. Births, deaths, and marriages, this has been a wonderful reading experience, and we are left in 1958 wondering what happened to those gloriously drawn characters, particularly the new generation of children.

Tamra I keep meaning to start this series! 3mo
andrew61 @Tamra I'd definitely recommend it. It was a bit daunting at first thinking it stretched to 5 volumes but once you get to know the characters it is very readable. That being said I read book 1 in 2020 so it has still taken a while. 3mo

“The fifth and final volume”. And with that, this epic series has finished. I‘ve adored each of these books and the sprawling, privileged, sad, funny and messy family they introduced me to. I‘m so sad it‘s ended. I‘ve been saving this last one up all year, then when I finally started it I read it too fast in big greedy gulps. Very tempted to go right back to the beginning and start again.

LeeRHarry I really enjoyed this series too. 😊 4mo
andrew61 Great series I plan to read this one next year and will be sad to leave the family behind. 4mo
TrishB I‘m going to give this series another go as I just couldn‘t get into the first one. But so many seem to love it. 4mo

JillR @trishb please do try again, I‘ve loved them so much! There‘s lots of characters to keep track of, but a handy recap and list at the start of each book. I feel a bit bereft now I‘ve finished… 4mo
JillR @andrew61 I really didn‘t want it to end. Unusually for me, I‘m thinking how great it would be if a younger writer took up the mantle and continued the series, would love to see them beyond 1958! 4mo

A final return to the Cazalets after 18 years and perhaps not wholly successful, with a lot of recapping and several beloved characters behaving rather out of character. But if you're a fan you'll want to read it anyway, if only for completeness sake.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ And so, my year with the Cazalets concludes. I loved getting to know these characters & feeling immersed in a series. (I don‘t seem to get as caught up in series as I did when I was younger.) Highly recommended!

Ruthiella I also miss that sense of immersion. Lovely when we get it back. 2y
MaureenMc @Ruthiella Yes! I don‘t think I realized how much I missed that feeling. 2y
Cathythoughts Nice review 👍🏻 I‘ve only read the first book … must get back to it this new year 🤞🏻😁 2y

Sniff. Last of the Cazalets. This volume is kind of a mess. Kids are now adults with kids of their own. Some characters disappear or are replaced by a new iteration. Some characters return. (Teddy, Simon). Some things are resolved. Some things aren't. Some characters die. A few storylines are ridiculous (Neville 🙄). The ending is decidedly bittersweet. Life is change, change is life. A wonderful series! Definitely own to revisit!

Cathythoughts Brilliant! You finished the series & it sounds wonderful… I need to move onto book 2 some day 😄 2y

I started this series (and loved it), but never finished. I think I need to start from the beginning. #changes #septembowie
