Submarine. Joe Dunthorne
Submarine. Joe Dunthorne | JOE DUNTHORNE
This hilarious coming-of-age novel follows Oliver Tate as he tries to find out why his father sometimes stays in bed for days at a time, why his mother is getting surfing lessons - and probably more - from a hippy-looking twonk, and as he tries to lose his virginity before it becomes legal - in just over a year.

Bailedbailed

Submarine was a recommended read at the end of a Penguin book that I had just finished. I was a bit dubious when a reviewer described it as 'Brilliant, laugh out-loud, funniest etc': it is rarely if ever that I have laughed out-loud when reading a book. Ever the optimist I purchased Submarine along with 'The Catcher in the Rye which was also recommended but I still have to read. I was so unimpressed with the first 50% of submarine that I bailed.

This coming-of-age novel is my kind of awkward. The movie based on this is an underrated gem. #awkwardreads #literaryluck

Mehso-so

Oliver Tate is an awful kid. The bullying he participates in is brutal and then he tries to murder his girlfriend‘s dog in order to “toughen her up” when her mom is diagnosed with brain cancer.

But then we see his kind, sad father‘s battle with depression and his parents‘ marriage shifting and changing and we want things to be okay for him.

It was well-written, often funny, and kept me turning pages but it‘s just not for everyone

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I actually think I kind of liked the movie better. 7y

Oliver and Jordana are one of my favourite literary couples. Although sometimes dark and edgy, their young love is intense, inspired and often very funny 💋💋#emojinov

#riotgrams day 11: this is the coolest #littlefreelibrary I've ever come across! When my friends lived in Houston, they lived a couple blocks away from it. I'd always make sure I checked it out every time I visit them

I quite liked this movie of young Oliver Tate growing up in Wales in the '80s, and the book is coming up soon on my TBR. Check out his list of possible reasons Jordana Bevan should have sex with him. #smellsliketeenspirit

#octphotochallenge I think Oliver Tate is a slightly nicer person in the film. Some of his pointier edges have been smoothed, although he's still wonderfully acerbic and cerebral and flawed. A truly memorable character #betterinthemovie
