It took me a while to get through this weird little book, but I did like it. In the face of a weird fog/plague/catastrophe the main character does her best to care for her mother, her ex husband, and the little boy placed in her care. #ToBLonglist but not #ToBShortlist I‘m surprised by that.

I love dystopian fiction. I like them weird and pretty dark. Bonus points if they're translations from unknown authors. I definitely recommend this if those things sound good to you. I definitely finished this while at a bar drinking water because I no longer give any fucks apparently.

A situation causing sickness has devastated a community and caused mass evacuations. A woman is trying to keep living in her home with fewer and fewer resources to do so. I thought this was a brilliant way to look at human-caused climate change, overconsumption, and the resource degradation and immigration that goes along with it. I‘m so glad the NBA put it on their longlist for translated literature.

Another odd #nbalonglist (translated) choice. In costal Uruguay, fish suddenly started dying, birds left the sky, and people got sick. In this strange dystopian world, a woman is paid to care for a child with a syndrome that causes extreme eating while keeping tabs on her mom and hospitalized ex-husband. Honestly, I didn‘t get this at all until about halfway through. The pieces came together a bit but not a very enjoyable reading experience.

Who are the authors you get excited about when you see they‘ve blurbed a book? This is the third anticipated book I‘ve picked up so far this year to discover a blurb from Mariana Enriquez (and the Silvia Moreno-Garcia blurb definitely made me look too) and they haven‘t let me down yet.
