Cold Eternity
Cold Eternity | S.A. Barnes
10 posts | 10 read | 2 to read
Cold Eternity, the newest space horror novel from the author of Dead Silence and Ghost Station, blends the dystopian dread of Severance with the catastrophic approach to AI from M3gan. Halley is on the run from an interplanetary political scandal that has put a huge target on her back. She heads for what seems like the perfect place to lay low: a gigantic space barge housing the cryogenically frozen bodies of Earths most wealthy citizens. The ship and its cryo program are long defunct, but Halley starts to think she sees figures crawling in the hallways, and theres a constant scraping, slithering, and rattling echoing in the vents. Its not long before Halley realizes she may have gotten herself trapped in an even more dangerous situation than the one she was running from.... Also by S.A. Barnes: Dead Silence Ghost Station At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

I look forward to every S.A. Barnes book. It‘s how I discovered sci-fi space horror and I‘m all in.
They are just so much fun. I should have tried them sooner as I‘m a big space monster movie fan.
This was a lot of fun; quite the ride. Perfect? No. But FUN. If anyone has any recs on books like this, please let me know below.
For those who have read this, I have a question in the comments.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

MaleficentBookDragon What was with the damn button?!?! Was it just to wear her down mentally and physically? I also wanted more of Karl. He died too fast. 2w
candc320 I thought the same thing about the button! I think it was just a way to get people to the ship to do the “job” and then they have to walk around and be vulnerable for the monster. Also, I assumed Karl would actually be an AI or just not on the ship, so I was a little disappointed he was just working for Zane. 2w
MaleficentBookDragon @candc320 I was thinking Karl was going to be some Frankenstein type doctor using the bodies in the tanks to make a monster or something. I wanted more of him and from him. I also really thought Niina was going to get away somehow and show up at the end. She would be an amazing villain in a second book. The end seemed rushed when we finally got there. I still loved this one though. 2w

candc320 I agree completely! 2w
Kitta I was just thinking about your book blanket haha 2w
RosePressedPages I definitely agree! I wish the suspense and dread had been built up a little more too. Once the big reveal happened, there wasn‘t very much time spent really fleshing it out. Sometimes I feel like Barnes shies away from committing to the horror she creates but I did think this one was very fun. Some space horrors I‘ve found so far are Paradise-1, Scourge Between Stars, Salvation Day, Contagion, We Have Always Been Here, and Ship of Fools. (edited) 2w
MaleficentBookDragon @RosePressedPages Thank you! I'm going to check those out. 2w

I‘ve really enjoyed every single one of this author‘s sci fi horror novels! I was never that into sci fi or fantasy but apparently the way to draw me in is horrific terror 😂. This was a good addition, with that claustrophobic feeling of space, creepy cryogenics, and sone super realistic AI. Somehow there‘s even a tiny bit of romance thrown in. Really solid space/monster horror! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I liked this one but not to the extent of her last two. I thought this premise was such a creepy idea, but the actual setting wasn't used to its fullest. I really wish the author would have leaned more on the cryogenic aspect. I wasn't as creeped out in this one. Something creepy would happen, and the main character would explain it away and not freak out, which made me not get freaked out. The middle was boring, the ending was rushed. 3.5/5

Needing money and trying to stay hidden from a scandal she had a part in, Hailey takes a very sketchy job at an old cryopreservation ship. And then she starts to see things. This starts sci-fi and goes solidly into horror. Barnes keeps doing the isolated space story, but it‘s still working, so I‘m not mad. There are a few pacing issues in spots, but overall really good.

To me it is Alien meets the Overlook Hotel with a twist of Total Recall. While the novel is full of actual scientific theories and facts, Barnes does not overload the reader with terms and facts. I did not see the ending coming at all! Everything I thought about Karl (the only other “living” person on the ship) was wrong. While the beginning is a bit of a slow burn, once things got going they did slow down and I could not put Cold Eternity down.

⭐️⭐️⭐️this is ok@between heavier books. Entertaining enough however no depth to characters, creature lore or science fiction. It‘s just a generic space horror that somewhat engaging. Not bad, but not great by any means. Took awhile to get going.

Yay for more space horror!! I liked the premises of her first two books, but not so much the execution. It felt like the horror really falls apart during the climax and each book has the same group of characters. I was happy this one was a little different and read it in one sitting. I still wish the horror had hit harder. I didn‘t mind the romantic subplot in this one; it didn‘t feel as random. Hoping her next one will be even creepier! 3.5 🌟

julesG I read "humour" instead of "horror" in your first sentence. ??‍♀️? I agree about the first two books, hence I still haven't read this one. 2mo
RosePressedPages @julesG hahaha I would definitely try a space humour book! I keep hoping she‘ll nail the execution…I‘m still searching for a really good and chilling space horror 2mo
julesG Same. I keep hoping her writing gives me chills. But I suppose I out-horrored myself as a teenager. 2mo
ReadingisMyPassion This is on my list of must-reads. 1mo

Hey, let's go to outer space! That'd be fun, right?!
No, you lunatic. Space is the setting for horror in space. Such as here.

Your main character is trying to hide out from authorities due to her activism so she takes a cush if boring job hauling cryogenic bodies.

How scary could that be? They're dead, right?
RIGHT?! 😟

RosePressedPages I‘m soooo excited to start this one! 2mo

I thoroughly enjoyed Barnes' 'Cold Eternity.' She somehow manages to make a huge ship feel claustrophobic. The horror was on-point and very atmospheric. There was a feeling of dread throughout the novel. The narrator was great as well. 5 stars.

Cold Eternity by S.A. Barnes is a tale of isolation and unanswered questions, centered around three-hour increments of time.

Having a kid showed me how quickly the hours can fly by. So the focus on pushing the button every three hours had me so anxious.
