The Lost Child of Lychford
The Lost Child of Lychford | Paul Cornell
12 posts | 17 read | 11 to read
It’s December in the English village of Lychford – the first Christmas since an evil conglomerate tried to force open the borders between our world and... another. Which means it’s Lizzie’s first Christmas as Reverend of St. Martin’s. Which means more stress, more expectation, more scrutiny by the congregation. Which means... well, business as usual, really. Until the apparition of a small boy finds its way to Lizzie in the church. Is he a ghost? A vision? Something else? Whatever the truth, our trio of witches (they don’t approve of “coven”) are about to face their toughest battle, yet! The Lost Child of Lychford is the sequel to Paul Cornell's Witches of Lychford. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Part two of the Witches of Lychford novellas. Another solid outing honestly. If you like contemporary witches that aren't all evil as all heck, then this may be the series for you/me. I really enjoyed it.

Christmas brings new drama as the Witches find themselves outmanoeuvered by a new supernatural foe. Probably my favourite Lychford novella for being uncomfortably dark and creepy at the same time as being slyly funny, compassionate and unapologetically hopeful.

imyril Also omg so much channelling of clerical waspishness about perception of being a vicar. I have to assume that‘s a first hand report 😉 4y

I found the first one in the Lychford series only okay, and the second one isn't a pick, either. It's interesting enough, but the special something is missing. I prefer Cornell's Shadow Police books. Still, they're short, so maybe I will give the third one another chance.

imyril We‘re on opposite poles here - I didn‘t get on with the Shadow Police (I found the first one awfully grim) but I love these for ploughing a parallel furrow with a lighter mood 😊 4y
PickwickPlockPlock @imyril Oh yes, the Shadow Police is nearly too grim for me, but I found the world building so interesting. Maybe the novellas just are too short to suck me in. 4y

After keeping evil out of Lychford, the trio of witches (Reverend Lizzie, local shopkeeper Autumn, and the elder town crank Judith) are settling in for the Christmas holiday, when a ghostly child appears to Lizzie. Spirits of the dead are one thing but the problem is that this ghost belongs to a child who is very much alive. I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first but I did like that we got to see more of each of the witchy trio.

I don‘t know if it‘s just because I‘ve been sick/taking cold meds or if my impression is objectively true...but the writing in this second installment seemed kind-of clunky & unclear. Also, it was a bit repetitive. Aaaand I read it at the wrong time (seasonally, this is a Christmas book). Suffice it to say, I wasn‘t quite feeling this one. I‘ll still read the third book but I‘ll do so with a little less enthusiasm & a little more discretion.

I found this book more than slightly creepy... but in a good way!

Finished my second book of #24in48 . I ended up picking up a novella to break up the longer books I'm reading. I enjoyed this second installment in a series about witches in a small English town on the border between worlds. @24in48 . Hoping to get some more reading done before I go see The Shape of Water tonight.

May not be as strong as the first story but it's still a nice slightly spooky read. Character development continues and we learn a little bit more about the three women who are apparently tapped with saving the world. I hope they can keep it together so the big bads can't get to us.

I've read two of my #novembertbr books and I have one I really need to try to finish because it's due back at the library. It just isn't drawing me in like I thought it would so I'm reading this instead.

This book was okay, on the border of pick and so-so. I really liked the first book in the series, so I feel a little let down by this one. Though its not a bad book, just okay. #netgalley

kammartinez Oh no, and I was so looking forward to this one because the first novella was so fun :(. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to find out for myself. 8y
