Welcome to Litsy!

This is a coming-of-age story with elements of magical realism peppered in. With the first read, you can't really tell what's real and what's fiction. That could be magic, or just the narrator's childhood perception of the world. I will definitely have to read it again to pick up on all the clues and Easter eggs. It was equal parts funny, sad, and terrifying. Altogether an intriguing read. Thanks @Bigwig for the gift!

Something about this novel keeps me up at night, wheels turning. It‘s a haunting coming-of-age tale set in a quiet 1960s Long Island neighborhood. The way Ford reveals the young narrator‘s innocence slowly slipping away during a year of strange happenings, mysteries, and danger is subtle and sad and oblique. If you still find yourself up late at night, unable to fully grasp or fully let go of your own childhood mysteries, this one‘s for you.

I'm traveling again and in NY running around like a lunatic. I'd hoped to be able to catch up on Litsy and make a dent in my #FreakyFriday reading.
Unfortunately that does not appear to be in the cards.

Last week I finished The Shadow Year. A fun read about a boy and his siblings growing up on Long Island, attempting to solve a crime.

Jeffrey Ford writes an darkly humorous, poignant, coming-of-age story about the "shadow year" in a young boy's life - a year where nothing was as it seemed and the neighborhood was turned upside down. He perfectly captures the essence of childhood in a small town, and his writing style was fantastic. Highly recommend!
