Miss Winter in the Library with a Knife
Miss Winter in the Library with a Knife: A Christmas Murder Mystery Like No Other | Martin Edwards
5 posts | 4 read | 1 to read
'A true master of British crime writing.' RICHARD OSMAN Six down-on-their-luck people with links to the world of crime writing have been invited to play a game this Christmas by the mysterious Midwinter Trust. The challenge seems simple but exciting: Solve the murder of a fictional crime writer in a remote but wonderfully atmospheric village in north Yorkshire to win a prize that will change your fortunes for good. Six members of staff from the shadowy Trust are there to make sure everyone plays fair. The contestants have been meticulously vetted but you can never be too careful. And with the village about to be cut off by a snow storm, everyone needs to be extra vigilant. Midwinter can play tricks on people's minds... The game is set - but playing fair isn't on everyone's Christmas list. After all, when the prize is to die for, it's so tempting to inject a little murder into the mystery.

Mehso-so

I would like it to be known that I solved both of the mysteries!

This was OK, but the characters were a bit two-dimensional and it didn't feel all that festive. If I'd travelled to a secluded village to play a murder mystery game, I'd expect more than a few A4 handouts.

It also stressed me out that I was supposed to be finding clues, but hadn't the foggiest what was meant by that. In the end, I solved it without writing much down.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ruthiella You figured it out! Well done. 🎅🏻💀🎄🔪(I‘m assuming you read this for the challenge! 😉) (edited) 1d
RaeLovesToRead @Ruthiella I've already done Red Cover and Set in Winter and Cosy and Anything... 🤔🤔🤔🤔 I'm reading xmas mysteries for a festive video which I'm hoping to drop on the 15th! 😁😁 1d
Ruthiella Looking forward to the video! 😊 1d

Six down on their luck mystery adjacent people are invited to the small village of Midwinter to compete in a fictional murder mystery game organised by the Midwinter Trust. Then two actual murders happen.

I read an excerpt late last year which made this sound like a locked room murder mystery homage to the Golden Age Mysteries where the reader is encouraged to guess the clues together with the amateur sleuths.

julesG The novel was a slog through a lot of repetitive backstory with characters that aren't developed much past their cliché descriptions "failed author," "literary agent involved in scandal," "token American barkeep". The clues weren't very difficult to work out and there is a handy solutions guide at the back.

The final nail in the coffin was the deus ex machina twist to make the ending seem plausible. ??

julesG #ChrismasCrimeChallenge Snowflake it's set at Christmas time and that part of Yorkshire is under a nice blanket of snow 3w

Ruthiella Sorry this wasn‘t a winner. But it‘s at least of the TBR now. 3w
julesG @Ruthiella Yepp! One less book on the list. 😁 3w
RaeLovesToRead Darn it. This is on my pile :/ 3w
julesG @RaeLovesToRead Sorry. Maybe you like it more than I did. You know I'm not a fan of epic/drawn out backstory/world-building, maybe that's why I didn't enjoy the novel more. 3w
RaeLovesToRead Haha. I'm not getting epic from the cover... but I'll be giving it a go! 3w

Netgalley ARC. Hoping it‘s as fun as it sounds but it started off kind of weird 🤣

Bookwormjillk Is it based on Clue? I just started a YA book based on Clue and I‘m obsessed 2mo
BarkingMadRead @bookwormjillk it seems that way? It‘s a murder mystery retreat and six people have to try and solve the murder mystery 2mo

Pickpick

I received an extract of this novel for reviewing purposes and can honestly say, those three chapters were not enough to fully form an opinion about the book. The extract packed a lot: village history, description of the game, a reading list, a true crime podcast, and some character introductions.

julesG ... to solve the murder of a fictional writer. Six members of staff are present to make sure everything runs smoothly. Add the usual tropes: a snowstorm, not everyone is playing fair, hidden agendas,... Colour me intrigued.

I can see this Christmas themed murder mystery working very well as an audiobook, hopefully with a cast of narrators.
