INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER - WINNER OF THE SWEDISH BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD - A profoundly moving debut novel that follows an elderly man's struggle to maintain autonomy over his own life: an emotional story of love, friendship, fatherhood, dogs, and atonement that is already an international sensation. "One of those 'you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll want to buy twenty copies and give them to everyone you love' books." --Fredrik Backman, bestselling author of A Man Called Ove, in The New Yorker "A powerful, sneakily emotional meditation on life and death, and the foundational relationships in our lives. This is a book that will echo in your soul." --Garth Stein, New York Times bestselling author of The Art of Racing in the Rain Bo is running out of time. Yet time is one of the few things he's got left. These days, his quiet existence is broken up only by daily visits from his home care team. Fortunately, he still has his beloved elkhound Sixten to keep him company ... though now his son, with whom Bo has had a rocky relationship, insists upon taking the dog away, claiming that Bo has grown too old to properly care for him. The threat of losing Sixten stirs up a whirlwind of emotion, leading Bo to take stock of his life, his relationships, and the imperfect way he's expressed his love over the years.

I have to agree with @Suet624 that this was a five star read. Bo is determined to stay independent and do things for himself and his dog despite what his son and daily caregivers say. His beloved wife has already been put into a facility due to her dementia and Bo spends much of his time remembering the past with her, his father, and with his son. This book was so masterfully written that despite knowing what Bo would face I cried like a baby.

Suet624 I was really affected by this one and missed Bo so much for a week or two after finishing the book. I‘m glad you felt the same way about the book. ❤️ 2w
Jas16 @Suet624 thank you for writing such an a wonderful review and making me look forward to it immediately 2w

Bo is quite elderly and lives alone with caregivers coming and going. His wife lives in a home with other dementia patients. Over the months that we know him we experience his decline. We learn of his relationships with his father and his son as he struggles with memories of his father and anger at his son who is just trying his best to care for his father. His love for his wife is an ever present theme. I could not put this book down. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Reggie I went to go visit my grandma in the home she lives in now because she has dementia. Last visit she was reliving the night she caught my grandpa cheating on her. This visit, she was pregnant. lol. She was happy, she thought it might be twins, I told her I‘d babysit for her if she needed me to.She chuckled and said thanks, mijo. 4w

Folks may remember I‘m attempting to complete my Vermont Independent Bookstore Passport program. While there are a great deal of independent bookstores in Vermont only 20 are part of this program this year. Yesterday I drove 5 hours in total to visit 2 bookstores. One store was in a town I‘d never visited and I spent a good deal of time exploring. I‘ve now gone to 19 stores - one more to go to complete this fantastic adventure.

Jas16 I love this so much! 2mo
BarbaraBB Me too! 2mo
Ruthiella Love it! Just one more to go. 👍 2mo

Bookwormjillk That is so cool 2mo
Suet624 @Jas16 @BarbaraBB @ruthiella I‘ve gotten so much out of it - visiting so many places I‘ve never been and delighting in the individual nature of each town and each bookstore. I definitely ended up with a few favorite bookstores/towns. 2mo
Cuilin I love this!!! Do you still collect the library stamps? 2mo
Suet624 @Cuilin the program ended during the pandemic, but I think I‘m going to do that on my own next year. There are a lot of libraries and they all have weird hours so I think it would be a fun challenge to take on. I really enjoyed doing that when the program was running, but I was working at the time so I didn‘t get to check in with too many of them. 2mo

Reggie This is so awesome, Sue! 2mo
Suet624 @kspenmoll @anncrystal @reggie It's been a wonderful thing for me to do this summer. Even though I've lived in Vermont for over 45 years there are many areas of the state I've never seen. Each town is so unique and the drives are beautiful. 2mo

When the Cranes Fly South, by Lisa Ridzén (2024, transl. 2025)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Premise: A Swedish man struggles to adapt to the increasing humiliations and losses of old age and the well-intentioned meddling of his son.

Review: This is a beautiful book, in its empathetic treatment of elder care and aging with dignity and in its portrayal of masculinity. ⬇️

Mattsbookaday It allows complex and hard things to be complex and hard, with lots of heart but without sappy sentimentality. My only complaint, and it‘s not insignificant, is that there was nothing surprising here: all the major plot points and conflicts were clear from the first pages, so this felt a bit rote. But it is so effective in what it does that this still gets five stars from me.
