The Summer We Ran
The Summer We Ran: A Novel | Audrey Ingram
6 posts | 4 read | 1 reading | 5 to read
The Summer We Ran is a perfectly nostalgic story of love, loss, and secrets that refuse to stay buried. Its exactly what I hope for in a summertime read. Annabel Monaghan, author of Same Time Next Summer Does your past define your destiny? Told through multiple perspectives, rich with emotion and immersive dual timelines, The Summer We Ran weaves together a story of lost love, devastating secrets, shocking sabotage, and the painstaking decision two people must make in order to fulfill the futures they each desire. In the summer of 1996, teenage Tess Murphys mom gave her two rules to abide by: keep quiet and stay out of trouble. Her mother landed a new job as a cook at an affluent Virginia estate and didnt want anything to risk the opportunity, least of all her outspoken daughter. What no one saw coming was Tess falling deeply in love with the boy next door, high-society Grant Alexander. Over a few wondrous and heat-filled months, Tess and Grants love blooms so ferociously it feels utterly impossible that anything can keep them apart, until tragedy strikes and the teenagers find themselves pained by betrayal with little hope to repair the damage thats been done. Now, two decades after their epic teenage romance abruptly ended in heartbreak, Tess and Grant are both running for Governor of Virginia, where secrets from that summer threaten to shatter their families, futures, and the love they once shared.

“No matter how hard I try, I can't escape him and our secrets. I tell myself it's only one lie, but…”

Soft pick-dual timeline 1996/2021. I stayed interested to find out what happened in the end, but the writing was less than stellar.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a hard book to rate. I was fully engaged the entire time and read most of it in one sitting. I really liked the first half, but without going into spoilers, there were a lot of things that bothered me in the second half. It had a great summer atmosphere and a lot of potential, but it just didn‘t nail it. #BOTM

This had two timelines - a summer romance in 1996 and then those ex-lovers winning their parties nomination for governor of Virginia in 2021. I knew none of the details going in and to write much I fear provides spoilers. Having recently read The Names, I‘ll say this story telling one path was ripe to tell multiple trajectories based off one decision.

AmyG They‘re up. 🎉 1mo
ICantImReading @AmyG what are you thinking about choosing this month? 1mo
AmyG I chose the S. A. Cosby book. We are reading it for Camp Litsy. 1mo
ICantImReading @AmyG I might listen to that through audio - I really enjoyed Razorblade Tears, and it‘s the same narrator 🙂 1mo
AmyG Oh that‘s nice. I listened to that, too, and enjoyed it. 1mo
