Between Breaths
Between Breaths: A Memoir of Panic and Addiction | Elizabeth Vargas
13 posts | 13 read | 13 to read
From the moment she uttered the brave and honest words, "I am an alcoholic," to interviewer George Stephanopoulos, Elizabeth Vargas began writing her story, as her experiences were still raw. Now, in BETWEEN BREATHS, Vargas discusses her accounts of growing up with anxiety-which began suddenly at the age of six when her father served in Vietnam-and how she dealt with this anxiety as she came of age, to her eventually turning to alcohol for relief. She tells of how she found herself living in denial, about the extent of her addiction and keeping her dependency a secret for so long. She addresses her time in rehab, her first year of sobriety, and the guilt she felt as a working mother who had never found the right balance. Honest and hopeful, BETWEEN BREATHS is an inspiring read.

🎧 I thought this was a book about how she overcame anxiety & panic attacks as she had these as a child ... apparently the answer was to self-medicate with copious amounts of alcohol, go through multiple rehab stays & relapses, make numerous mistakes, hurt the people she loved, lose jobs and finally get sober because she credits being sober to finally completely managing her anxiety. Good book just not what I thought it was going to be. ⭐️⭐️⭐️2/3

Moment of seriousness here: today was a really crappy day. Then I went to yoga class, and the first two songs the instructor played made me think of my biological mother. I'm adopted, and I've never met her, she died of an accidental drug overdose in 2009. I only discovered who she was this past January. The grief that comes with this situation is hard for many to understand, and it hits hard at random moments. Today was one of those days.

Mariposa_Bookworm I'm sorry for your loss. Although you never met her, there is still a part of you that you've lost. I wish I had better words to offer, but I send loving thoughts your way. 💜 7y
alisiakae @Mariposa_Bookworm aww...thank you so much. Even though I never got to meet her, I have met two incredible half-sisters (also adopted), biological grandparents (all my grandparents I grew up with have passed away, so this was also amazing!), and just last month I met my birth father for the first time. So there has been a lot of good in with the bad. 😊 (edited) 7y

I have watched various shows on ABC for as long as I can remember and have enjoyed Elizabeth's reporting. I really enjoyed this audio book read by Elizabeth. She was honest and sincere in telling her journey of addiction. Highly recommended.

SaraFair Just heard an interview with Elizabeth Vargas this week as a podcast- "Turning Point". She read excerpts and, wow, she did well to escape what she did. A very frank discussion on her issues and very courageous to put her life out there like that! 8y
SaraFair Sorry - it was "On Point" (npr). 8y

Before she was in the national spotlight, Elizabeth Vargas was a local reporter and anchor here in Chicago. I saw her in action many times and always thought she was so confident and self-assured. You would never know that she that suffered from severe anxiety since childhood and ultimately alcoholism. As the adage goes, everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.

saguarosally I lived in Chicagoland in 1990 but I can't remember her for the life of me. But it is interesting to see how we all have demons to face. 8y

A truly fantastic event tonight at the Free Library of Philadelphia with Elizabeth Vargas and one of my favorite local anchors, Tamala Edwards.

Just watched this brave woman bare her soul on national tv. Very interested in reading her book when it comes out; I've lost two siblings to addiction and have a third who is clinging to sobriety, but watching this interview tonight gave me much better insight into the struggles of those who live with alcoholism and addiction.

StephBengtson I've seen his spoken word and lived it! 8y
DebinHawaii I am planning on watching this tonight when it airs here. 👍 8y
JacqMac I'm interested as well. 8y
