The Last Spirits of Manhattan
The Last Spirits of Manhattan: A Novel | John A McDermott
2 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
Based on a true story, this sparkling and witty novel whisks you to 1956 Manhattan, where famed director Alfred Hitchcock is hosting a star-studded party in an allegedly haunted houseonly for the soiree to be interrupted by a ghostly party crasher. After fleeing her mundane life in the Midwest, Carolyn Banks finds herself in her enigmatic great-aunts eerie mansion on Manhattans Upper East Side. Inside its crumbling faade, suspense director Alfred Hitchcock is throwing a party, gleefully informing his celebrity guests that the venue is supposedly haunted. It all seems like a fun gag, but Carolyn knows that the line between reality and the supernatural is dangerously blurred here. Soon, the paranormal entities are mingling with guests like Charles Addams and Henry Fonda. As Carolyn grapples with romantic entanglements and ghostly encounters, she discovers long-buried family secrets, challenging her understanding of love, loyalty, and legacy. A striking mix of the haunting and the heartwarming, The Last Spirits of Manhattan is an unputdownable novel about a family reunion unlike any other, set against the bewitching backdrop of 1950s New York City.

This dedication really set the tone for this book, how sweet is this?! But this really was a fun, reality-escaping read! I had to really hold myself back from doing any research while reading it because I didn‘t want to accidentally find a spoiler. Well, now that I‘ve finished it, I‘ll be falling down all the rabbit holes learning more about the party in this book 😆

Aims42 Themes: Ghosts, Mad Men-esque themes, Hollywood parties in 1950‘s NYC, and the BBC (or CBS) show “Ghosts” 4d
TimEW @Aims42 I agree, I love the dedication. Thank you for sharing that, it enticed me to put this book on my reading list. 3d

#FridayHappyReadingHour time!! Enjoying some wine (my father-in-law was very stingy with it yesterday 😂 I got 1/2 a glass the whole holiday, so I‘m treating myself to an adult pour today), along with Doritos and my current read which is SO GOOD!

Tamra What? You deserve a half a bottle for surviving the holiday on half a glass. 7d

Aims42 @mcctrish THANK YOU! He showed me the two bottles (a white and a Chianti) when we got there and I guess because I turned down a glass at 11:30am that meant I didn‘t one at all…? Idk. In-laws at holidays are weird 😆 7d
Aims42 @Ruthiella Thanks! ☺️🥰🤗 7d
mcctrish @Aims42 My father in law has a heavy hand which is great until my MIL has had too much and becomes toxic - timing is everything with those 2 7d
Aims42 @Tamra LOL, thank you!! I felt so awkward yesterday asking for a glass during the big meal, and once I finished it, the host/hostess didn‘t offer to fill my glass again and I didn‘t know where the open bottle went to just fill my glass. Idk. I‘m blaming Mercury being retrograde for some of the miscommunication, but can‘t blame it all on that 😆 7d
kspenmoll You deserve a bottle! 😂😂😂 Thanksgiving day is a crime ! 7d
Aims42 @mcctrish oh geez, that‘s not an ideal situation either 🫣 My Father in law drinks beer, and my MIL doesn‘t drink at all, so honestly I should just be grateful I had any wine 🤭 I usually bring my own, but then I feel like a real lush so I‘ve stopped doing that lol 7d
Aims42 @kspenmoll Thank YOU!!! Just one of those moments where I tried not to think, “if we were at my parents house, this wouldn‘t happen 🤨” 🤭 7d
dabbe @Aims42 I say #youdoyou!!! Thanksgiving with extended family is usually best gotten through with a bottle or two. 🤩🍷😘 7d
Aims42 @dabbe LOL! That‘s my family‘s philosophy, but my in-laws missed that memo I guess 🤣 I love all you ladies here validating my feelings! 🥰♥️ 7d
dabbe @Aims42 I'm toasting you right now! 🥂 7d
