The Ancestor's Tale
The Ancestor's Tale: A Pilgrimage to the Dawn of Evolution | Richard Dawkins
6 posts | 16 read | 14 to read
With unparalleled wit, clarity, and intelligence, Richard Dawkins, one of the world's most renowned evolutionary biologists, has introduced countless readers to the wonders of science in works such as The Selfish Gene. Now, in The Ancestor's Tale, Dawkins offers a masterwork: an exhilarating reverse tour through evolution, from present-day humans back to the microbial beginnings of life four billion years ago. Throughout the journey Dawkins spins entertaining, insightful stories and sheds light on topics such as speciation, sexual selection, and extinction. The Ancestor's Tale is at once an essential education in evolutionary theory and a riveting read.

Well it‘s taken me a while to get through its 700 pages (no fault of the author of course) but yet another tour de force from Dawkins (and his co-author). All of life in one book. The beauty that is evolution by natural selection really is the greatest story of all.

alisiakae Have you read it? I love this book. I was an Anthropology major in undergrad, and still learned SO much from reading this. 5y
TheSpineView @4thhouseontheleft Not yet. It is in that TBR pile I have been meaning to get to. I know when I die I'll have books stacked to the ceiling TBR! 5y

I needed a little break from Lord of the Rings. Time for a little bit of science before I jump back into Middle Earth.

The Ancestor's Tale is my 500+ pages pick. Awesome book that goes through the entire evolutionary tree and describes how we are related to every organism on the planet. It starts with Homo sapiens and goes down every branch to slime molds and single-celled organisms. If you are fascinated by biology and evolution, this is the ultimate book! My copy is being borrowed by a friend, so here's a "cousin" I photographed in Costa Rica. #funphotofriday
