Parts of this book were bleak and I was almost constantly listening with a slight feeling of dread about what might be about to happen, but I also enjoyed it. It actually ended on a more hopeful note than I expected through most of the story. I felt it described the setting of 1860s New Zealand and the gold rush very well.

#readaroundtheworld #newzealand Taking place during the 1860‘s gold rush in NZ, this story is an unfolding of relationships with each other, with the land and of course with the gold. The Maori character Pare, is the least well drawn but the colonists are nuanced. Well worth the read. Picture is from the Otago gold fields at that time. Brutal conditions with rats and greed fighting it out.
One of those times were I wished I‘d trusted my instincts and bailed! This is bleak, depressing and down right disturbing at times, it‘s stayed with me and not in a good way. (Beautiful writing though.)
Lots of drama in this tale from the gold rush in 19th Century New Zealand. Joseph Blackstone has gone there with his wife and mother but they soon discover that succeeding is only for the few. My problem with the novel is, I never really believed the characters and therefore didn‘t really care about them.
