There is no easy path for a woman aspiring to powerA concubine at the palace learns quickly that there are many ways to capture the Emperor's attention. Many paint their faces white and style their hair attractively, hoping to lure in the One Above All with their beauty. Some present him with fantastic gifts, such as jade pendants and scrolls of calligraphy, while others rely on their knowledge of seduction to draw his interest. But young Mei knows nothing of these womanly arts, yet she will give the Emperor a gift he can never forget.Mei's intelligence and curiosity, the same traits that make her an outcast among the other concubines, impress the Emperor. But just as she is in a position to seduce the most powerful man in China, divided loyalties split the palace in two, culminating in a perilous battle that Mei can only hope to survive. In the breakthrough first volume in the Empress of Bright Moon duology, Weina Dai Randel paints a vibrant portrait of ancient Chinawhere love, ambition, and loyalty can spell life or deathand the woman who came to rule it all.

Good but I wish the author went into more depth with the womens history and emotions.

#Donuts, #coffee and a good book on Valentine's Day.

I picked this on a fluke on Overdrive, and I am so happy I did! Book one of two, and they are fast paced but sooo good. It has everything you could want - palace politics, scheming, great clothes, love... I learned a lot from this duopoly about Empress Wu and the Tang Dynasty.

I had so much personal success with picking out my TBR ahead of time that I decided to keep it up. For the first time in forever I‘m not rushing through my books impatient to figure out what I‘ll read next. It‘s quite nice. I‘m really looking forward to the tagged book. I saw it recommended on Janie Chang‘s Twitter as her top historical fiction. It‘s the story of China‘s only female empress. It sounds amazing!

Peddler410 I will need to add this to my To Read app. 7y

A truly engrossing historical novel about a period of time I have no familiarity with. The author‘s thorough research fascinated me with every turn of the page, and it‘s complemented by a plot whose building tension keeps you wanting to know what will happen next. The love story is believable and well-paced (no insta-love!), and the complications our protagonist is faced with are compelling (as are her well-reasoned responses).

Met this Texas author earlier this year and heard her speak on a panel, became social media friends, then saw that she just won the Rita. I honestly have not read many Rita winners, but they usually aren't also this kind of historical fiction. Decided to take the leap and am enjoying so far. 😎#bitmoji

This duo of books telling the story of Empress Wu in the 7th century meets both the prompts for #rockinmay ( #chinagrove ) and #maybookflowers ( #farflung ). On the TBR list! #historicalfiction

Cinfhen I like when challenges collide 💞💞😉 8y

Going to post my #rainbowbookstack a little early. I think it turned out pretty well! Much thanks to my wife for the bottom book because I had no violet on hand. #riotgrams P.S. Maybe I didn't need Kraken in there but I just love Kraken.

Kammbia1 Charles deLint is one of my favorites. Good to see his novel in your stack. 8y

TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Kammbia1 I have about half a shelf of his books! I actually hadn't read any of his stuff since college but I just got back into them recently with Tapping the Dream Tree. What's your favorite of his? 8y
Kammbia1 The Little Country and Memory and Dream are my favorites. I just read Trader and liked it a bit. Here's my review of Trader: http://marion-hill.com/book-review-99-trader-by-charles-de-lint/ 8y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Kammbia1 I love all three of those! I think the first 2 Newford collections are my favorites. Thanks for the link! I enjoyed the review and your site. 8y

So ... I've decided not to go to my book club meeting tomorrow ... Didn't read the book, yet another novel about a naive young girl plunged into royal politics didn't appeal and ... meh ... I'm just not in the mood ... Does this make me a bad person? Am I losing my bookish cred?☹️

Reviewsbylola I always ended up having fun at book club even if I didn't read the book or didn't feel like going initially. 8y
Twocougs Of course not. Not every book is for every person. Instead of feeling that way, read something you really love tonight and go next month😀 8y
megt Not at all! You'll find a book you can't help but dive in to soon enough. 8y
