Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Light Fantastic
Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Light Fantastic | Jeffrey Lang
7 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Returning to the story begun in the novel Immortal Coil and continuing in the bestselling Cold Equations trilogy, this is the next fascinating chapter in the artificial life of one of Star Trek’s most enduring characters. He was perhaps the ultimate human achievement: a sentient artificial life-form—self-aware, self-determining, possessing a mind and body far surpassing that of his makers, and imbued with the potential to evolve beyond the scope of his programming. And then Data was destroyed. Four years later, Data’s creator, Noonien Soong, sacrificed his life and resurrected his android son, who in turn revived the positronic brain of his own artificial daughter, Lal. Having resigned his commission, the former Starfleet officer now works to make his way on an alien world, while also coming to grips with the very human notion of wanting versus having a child. But complicating Data’s new life is an unexpected nemesis from years ago on the U.S.S. Enterprise—the holographic master criminal Professor James Moriarty. Long believed to be imprisoned in a memory solid, Moriarty has created a siphon into the "real" world as a being of light and thought. Moriarity wants the solid form that he was once told he could never have, and seeks to manipulate Data into finding another android body for him to permanently inhabit...even if it means evicting the current owner, and even if that is Data himself. ™, ®, & © 2013 CBS Studios, Inc. I just had to share this photo after I saw the “sock monkey“ theme for the #MarchMadnessReadathon #DailyChallenge.

Years ago, I knitted a traditional grey and white monkey for my daughter. She loved it so much that I decided to adapt the pattern to make another, based on her favourite Star Trek character, Data.

Star Trek is the #favoritefandom I've joined recently. I am loving TNG, and can't choose a favorite character because I think they work so well together. I probably identify the most with Data though. I have never read a Star Trek book, so here is the map of a corn maze I explored with friends today. Trekkie Littens, what Star Trek books (or comics!) do you recommend?

Audiobookhead I have only done a couple Star Trek books so far. Both were okish. I would however recommend a episode, season 4 episode 11 "Data's Day" it's kind of a day in the life of Data. 8y
bmsddk Welcome to the fandom! 🚀🌛☄ I personally enjoy the TNG and DS9 Star Trek books best. They're light reads, good if you're in the mood for something more than fluff but not one that really makes you think or react -- perfect if you just want to enjoy the ride! Unless there's a sub-series (eg: the six Double Helix books), it doesn't matter the order, so you can choose whichever book has a plot catches your interest or focuses on a certain character. 8y
bmsddk How did you get into Star Trek? 8y
Broke_Girl_Reads @Audiobookhead ooh thanks! I'm on season two (just passed "elementary, dear Data), so that's something to look forward to! 8y
Broke_Girl_Reads @bmsddk thanks! I'm in the mood for something fun and light so I'll look those up for sure! I have a lot of Trekkie friends so I tried out OS a few months ago. I liked it but it wasn't keeping my attention, so they recommended that I switch to TNG and I fell in love instantly 8y

Pickpick

It. Has. Everything. Vic Fontaine. The hologram doctor from voyager. That thing where a literary supervillain AI kidnaps your robot daughter. But seriously. trek books are all over the board in terms of quality and this one was up there. There was a lot of stuff about being a parent that resonated with me, plus plenty of goofiness.
