American academic Trevor Stratton discovers a box full of artifacts from World War I as he settles into his new office in Paris. The pictures, letters, and objects in the box relate to the life of Louise Brunet, a feisty, charming Frenchwoman who lived through both World Wars. As Trevor examines and documents the relics the box offers up, he begins to imagine the story of Louise Brunet's life: her love for a cousin who died in the war, her marriage to a man who works for her father, and her attraction to a neighbor in her building at 13 rue Thérèse. The more time he spends with the objects though, the truer his imaginings of Louise's life become, and the more he notices another alluring Frenchwoman: Josianne, his clerk, who planted the box in his office in the first place, and with whom he finds he is falling in love. This Bonus Edition eBook contains additional images of the original contents from the box of artifacts that will delight readers.

I had mixed feelings about this book. It had an interesting premise as the author used artifacts from her neighbor‘s life to build a fictional story about this woman. However I wasn‘t always excited to pick it up each time that I went back to it. I might have enjoyed it more if I read it straight through rather than squeezing it in between other reads.

I almost bailed with this book. However I was seduced by the actual physical book, it was great to hold a hard cover complete with dust cover and lovely paper. Most books here are paper backs and any hard covers are really expensive. Anyway this book confused me at first but once I got into it all went well. Great idea. Story based on a box of stuff found in French flat of deceased woman. Real stuff but story complete fiction. Glad I persisted.

I've been way laid again from my TBR pile by this book. It's my next read. Found by my partner at the Save The Children book sale held at our local Uni. I don't go anymore as I get too overwhelmed by the huge room full of books and all the people. Out of the box of books she arrived home with , this was the only one that grabbed my attention and said read me now! Looks intriguing and again the book itself is a pleasure to behold.

This is a very interesting #epistolary style novel. The author found a suitcase of items left behind by an old woman that lived in her building (I believe) like photographs, postcards, coins etc., from WWII and fashioned a story around them.
