Hardboiled and Hard Luck
Hardboiled and Hard Luck | Banana Yoshimoto
14 posts | 17 read | 10 to read
In cherished novels such as Kitchen and Goodbye Tsugumi, Banana Yoshimotos warm, witty, and heartfelt depictions of the lives of young Japanese have earned her international acclaim and best-seller status. Her insightful, spare vision returns in two novellas possessed by the ghosts of love found and lost. In Hardboiled, the unnamed narrator is hiking in the mountains on an anniversary she has forgotten about, the anniversary of her ex-lovers death. As she nears her hotelstopping on the way at a hillside shrine and a strange soba shopa sense of haunting falls over her. Perhaps these eerie events will help her make peace with her loss. Hard Luck is about another young woman, whose sister is dying and lies in a coma. Kunis fianc left her after the accident, but his brother Sakai continues to visit, and the two of them gradually grow closer as they make peace with the impending loss of their loved one. Yoshimotos voice is clear, assured, and deeply moving, displaying again why she is one of Japans, and the worlds, most beloved writers.

Two short stories which both use death to tell a story.
The first one was peculiar and set in one night with lots of remembering. Second is the sister of someone who is dying.
Both made me think about end of life and relationships, in a positive way.

Hardboiled & Hard Luck Banana Yoshimoto 5 stars ⭐
The 3rd read for this year also a Japanese literature.
Well I finished this book in one day, it's simple written but so deep.
📖☔
Yoshimoto‘s voice is clear, assured, and deeply moving, displaying again why she is one of Japan‘s, and the world‘s, most beloved writers. The two stories are sensitive and deep at the same time trying to imply a lesson how to cope with loss and move on.

I think this is one of those books you shouldn't rush in a day because it's less about the who-what-when and more to do about reflection. About coming to terms with loss, with past ghosts and moving on. It's a book that holds significance in the simplicity of its words and brevity. A book you give away to a friend than something you read in the phone, the better to smell the pages and meditate upon the texts, if that makes sense.

Emilymdxn Banana yoshimoto is one of my fave writers of all time! 5y

whimsy @Emilymdxn Any recommendations? :D I've read Amrita from her, but I like this one better. I want to try Moshi Moshi next. 5y

It's funny when a book sneaks up to you sometimes.

Especially as I've been putting this off all year.

Banana Yoshimoto‘s Hardboiled and Hard Luck is a pair of short stories that capture the current situations of two women. The first tells of a woman staying in a haunted hotel/town and reflecting on the anniversary of her ex‘s passing. The second is about a woman coming to terms with her sister‘s decline after an aneurism puts her in a declining vegetative state. Both women are strange and relatable and haunted. The prose is simple.

Day21 #SeptemberPhotoChallenge #translatedbooks 'Kitchen' was my first and is my favorite Banana Yoshimoto book, but it and my other favorite translated book "Like Water For Chocolate' seem to be MIA from my bookshelves. So here are a few other books by Yoshimoto. I read many of her books when I was traveling back & forth to Japan for work & like her blending of Japanese & Western cultures & quirky characters. #somethingforsept ?????
