As the Civil War rages, another battle breaks out behind the lines. During a long hot July in 1863, the worst race riots the United States has ever seen erupt in New York City. Earlier that year, desperate for more Union soldiers, President Abraham Lincoln instituted a drafta draft that would allow the wealthy to escape serving in the army by paying a $300 waiver, more than a year's income for the recent immigrant Irish. And on July 11, as the first drawing takes place in Lower Manhattan, the city of New York explodes in rage and fire. Stores are looted; buildings, including the Colored Foundling Home, are burned down; and black Americans are attacked, beaten, and murdered. The police cannot hold out against the rioters, and finally, battle-hardened soldiers are ordered back from the fields of Gettysburg to put down the insurrection, which they dobrutally. Fifteen-year-old Claire, the beloved daughter of a black father and Irish mother, finds herself torn between the two warring sides. Faced with the breakdown of the citythe homeshe has loved, Claire must discover the strength and resilience to address the new world in which she finds herself, and to begin the hard journey of remaking herself and her identity. Addressing such issues as race, bigotry, and class head-on, Walter Dean Myers has written another stirring and exciting novel that will shake up assumptions, and lift the spirit.

Written as a screenplay, this book describes the 1863 draft riots in New York City mostly from the viewpoint of Claire, a biracial teenager. Irish immigrants didn‘t want to be drafted to fight in the Civil War. The view was strengthened by the ability of wealthy “swells” to pay their way out of the draft, & the belief that former slaves would come north to take their jobs. The anger led to violence, looting, & a brutal response by Union soldiers.

Suet624 Wow. Fascinating stuff. I didn‘t know about the Irish not wanting to participate. 2y
Daisey @Suet624 It was incredibly interesting and an event about which I had never read. 2y

Daisey @megnews @sblbooks As usual, I‘m not great at remembering to tag anyone, but I‘ve managed to fit in a couple MG March books this week. 2y
megnews I enjoyed this a few years back. This was when they burned the Colored Orphan Asylum down right? 2y
Daisey @megnews Yes, that‘s in this one. 2y

Book three complete! So much to think about here from one of the greats. It‘s very interesting to read this now vs what would have been the experience when it came out. #reversereadathon
