#OnThisDay in 1993, Maya Angelou became the first African-American and first female poet to perform at a Presidential Inauguration when she read her poem "On the Pulse of Morning" at the Inauguration of Bill Clinton.

Poet Laureate Maya Angelou paints rich and poignant images in this powerful poem. Her words set the tone for the inauguration of President Clinton. She was a brilliant writer and an astounding activist. The world was better because of her.
