Prometheus Bound
Prometheus Bound | Aeschylus
11 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
For readers accustomed to the relatively undramatic standard translations of Prometheus Bound, this version by James Scully, a poet and winner of the Lamont Poetry Prize, and C. John Herington, one of the world's foremost Aeschylean scholars, will come as a revelation. Scully and Herington accentuate the play's true power, drama, and relevance to modern times. Aeschylus originally wrote Prometheus Bound as part of a tragic trilogy, and this translation is unique in including the extant fragments of the companion plays.

#SinisterArt Day 21
Baroque artist Rubens is one of the most disturbing artists I'm familiar with. There are two other works by Rubens that would be easy contenders for a #SinisterArt posting, but the realist treatment of the mythical subject matter makes them a little too horrifying.

batsy Not excessively gory; just the smallest, cleanest details to make it so vivid and brutal. 1y
vivastory @batsy Things that are over the top in terms of gore tend to not bother me a lot bc it often borders on camp. it's as you say the small details that really unnerve me. 1y

This is another one of those plays where there was most likely another one after it (Prometheus Unbound) & there also seems to be some quibbling about the authorship. I wish there was a follow up! This is such a strange, powerful play where nothing happens & everything is bound up in the force of character & charisma of Prometheus, chained to the craggy rocks for the crime of defying Zeus & "loving humans too much" by giving them the gift of fire.

batsy The rocks, the wind, the waves of the ocean, the beating of wings, & the scent of the sea: it's all very elemental & incredibly vivid. Prometheus states his case convincingly: "all human arts come from Prometheus". He has some great lines: "For humans in the beginning had eyes but saw to no purpose; they had ears but did not hear. Like the shapes of dreams they dragged through their long lives and muddled everything haphazardly." I loved it. 2y
batsy I read the version translated by David Grene. Painting by Theodoor Rombouts (Antwerpen, 1597-1637 CE). 2y

KathyWheeler I have seen that painting so often but never looked to see who the artist was. Thanks. Love your review. 2y
BiblioLitten Superb review. This is the only book I read by Aeschylus. The painting captures the drama so well. 2y
batsy @DivineDiana @KathyWheeler @BiblioLitten Thank you! I love the painting too, and it captures the essence of the play so well. 2y

Thanks for the tag @RaeLovesToRead !

1. This is a tough one 😂 Top of the TBR in terms of books I'd love to buy? ... Heh. Assembly by Natasha Brown & Checkout 19 by Claire-Louise Bennett.

2. No. I'll get to it, though! Give or take a decade.

3. Aeschylus's play Prometheus Bound, KJ Charles's Subtle Blood (sad to see the end of the trilogy!) as well as Two Gentlemen of Verona for #ShakespeareReadAlong & Rilke's poems.

#WondrousWednesday @Eggs

merelybookish Haha to buy and to read...not the same thing. 😀 2y

The tragedy of Prometheus being bound to a rock by Zeus via Haphaestus for his love of mankind. The play is short and takes place in a single setting, the rock where Prometheus has been bound. Friends visit and share in his commiseration. Very profound. The story induces a strong sadness for the god who is punished for thwarting the destruction of humanity and gifting them with fire 🔥 and other things the gods deem humans unworthy of. 💝

How easy for one who fares in pleasant ways to admonish those in adversity.

For sorrow flitteth now to one and now to another, and visiteth each in his turn.
