(1/2) Oops. Just completely forgot to post about the last two books I read lol. Been completely swept up in the new school year!

My last read of the summer. I figured it was short enough to squeeze in before school started & would be nice to knock out before I started the September seminar on CLR James that I‘m taking with the Brooklyn Institute for Social Research! 🙂

After yesterday‘s noise and mayhem, people are mostly gone & all is quiet now. I am reading, alternating between the cookbook/essay collection I got for Xmas & the novel I started last week. I caught my visitors‘ cold & can‘t speak 🤧🤫. We‘ll be having leftovers for lunch then go for a walk, hoping it kills the lurgies...

And with that, I'm done with the African Immortals series. Although I think Due does an excellent---and creative---job of portraying the complicated relationship between parents and their children as they grow into adulthood, many times throughout this novel I found the characters' actions to be inconsistent or their motivations to be confusing, and the ending doesn't really satisfy me. It's possible that reading Joplin's Ghost might help a bit.

Such a lovely and beautiful (in content and visuals) book. Thoughtfully curated essays, cool recipes, and gorgeous images. Good for kitchen or coffee table.

A really beautifully curated collection of gorgeous art and photography, essays, poetry, stories of family and community, and lots of delicious sounding recipes. It‘s truly a joyful celebration of the black experience, showcasing so much talent and creativity. Thanks to NetGalley for the chance to read this unique book.

a really amazing portrait of caribbean american radicalism in the first three decades of the 20th century, particularly in the black nationalist & revolutionary socialist circles of harlem. extremely well-researched and considered writing. i especially loved the last chapter on cuban emigré radicalism & afro-cubanidad in my hometown of tampa!! ⭐️ 5/5 ⭐️

an amazing and intriguing thesis on the role of inter-regional communication and rumor in transmitting revolutionary ideas across the atlantic and through the entire greater caribbean!! this book really made me think about how i want to approach this era as a history teacher by connecting the lineages of the american, french & haitian revolutions. ⭐️ 5/5 ⭐️
