Very much felt like an elderly coming of age story for 70 year old Tommy who thought he could back to his old life. I kept hearing Billy Joel in my head, "then the king and queen went back to the green, but you can never go back there again." It also felt Twilight Zone-y as Tommy walked around Downtown not understanding why it all looked so different, and feeling like an "old fool" for thinking it'd be the same.

Leftcoastzen That‘s an oldie 1d
TheBookgeekFrau @Leftcoastzen Yes it is. It's been sitting on my shelves since the 90s, and it was an oldie then 😂 I thought I had read it, turns out I hadn't 24h

I thought the story would carry the weird writing style. I thought wrong. #HailTheBail

What a fascinating imagining of the people who shared in the life of an ancient text. It really brings to mind just how much was lost in book burnings of yore.

Susanita One of my favorites! 1w
TheBookgeekFrau @Susanita I was so engrossed in it I actually lost all sense of time and place. It's a rare book that does that! 1w

I always enjoy EH's books, especially her earlier ones. The characters feel more authentic and the stories less formula. This one drew me in so completely I felt like I was in the bistro watching the story unfold.

janeycanuck I‘m making my way through her backlist, one book a month. Really looking forward to this one! 2w
TheBookgeekFrau @janeycanuck It has a little bit of a slow start, but before you know it you're deeply invested in this restaurant life. So good! 2w

Not my favorite Conroy. The descriptions of Charleston were long-winded and boring; and quite frankly, annoying. But the story, oh man, what a story! It was compelling, ugly, thought provoking, gripping, and worth reading.

julieclair I‘m adding this to my stack, and will skim past the Charleston descriptions. 😉 1mo
TheBookgeekFrau @julieclair That's exactly how to read it 😁 Outside of that it was so good! 1mo

I really enjoyed this slice of life family story. Being close to the MC's age, there was quite a bit I could identify with.

History wise--interesting and enlightening; story wise--kind of boring.

bookandbedandtea I loved this book when I was a kid! I think I was 10 or so when I got it from a book fair and I know I read it multiple times throughout middle school. Child-me was very impressed by Karana. 2mo
TheBookgeekFrau @bookandbedandtea I was trying to decide if child me would have been impressed. I think yes that she befriended the dog, but that's about it 😂 2mo
bookandbedandtea @TheBookgeekFrau I think I was impressed that she could survive on her own. 10-13 year old me knew nothing about providing for herself. 😉 2mo
