The Opportunist: A Novel | Elyse Friedman
post image

When I think of #theworldismyoyster I think of opportunity. So I picked the book The Opportunist as my book for August's #titlesandtunes and my song...Lose Yourself by Eminem.

Of course, as usual, I have no idea when in August I'll get to this...so, we will see.

AudiobookingWithLeah @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB So I wondered why you two never engaged with my post, and I just figured it out today when I was posting my review of The Opportunist...I used a hashtag in place of @ ...smh...figures that it was a user error on my part.🤣 9mo
Cinfhen So you DID finish the book!!!!! Yay!!! This is one of my favorite songs!!!! Awesome choice!! How was the book??? It‘s on my TBR 😀 9mo
BarbaraBB Ah so sorry you felt that way! Use the @ and all will be fine 😇. And I love that Eminem song! 9mo
AudiobookingWithLeah @BarbaraBB Yeah, it was my fault...I didn't even realize that it was I did until I almost did it a second time...and then the light bulb went off. It's probably not the last time I'll do it. 😔 9mo

Undoubtedly one of my favourite books and authors. “A Tale of Love and Darkness” is the story of a country through the life of the author, Amos Oz. The imagery and the personal stories, together with the narration of the historical events and the appearance of remarkable writers in the story make of this book a unique literary jewel.

BarbaraBB Beautiful picture 😍 2y

PICK, PICK, PICK!
I adored this book. Winton really does write Australia well. The language, the characters and the landscape.
This book has it all, the good and the bad. It made me both laugh out loud and cry. I'm sure Jaxie and Fintan will stay with me a long time.
#Ozfiction is awesome!

nichollinlove Your review makes me interested in a book I know nothing about! I love it! 4y

#HeatOfJuly Day 16: #HotInHere with a face marked by fire in this powerful novel. As Fats noted in her review: The Rough-Face Girl is an Algonquin Indian tale that presents an enchanting retelling of Cinderella. It speaks of kindness, humility, and beauty that radiates from within. Full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-7D4

This has been on my shelf for yrs. and now seemed to be the appropriate time to read it. Through the lives of 6 North Korean defectors, the book details everyday life there, including horrific descriptions of the effects of the famine (Up to 20% of the population died of starvation or resultant illness, and babies and children‘s physical and cognitive developments were forever stunted.). Con‘t below:

arubabookwoman It details how each of the individuals arrived at the decision to defect, despite the pervasive propaganda they were subjected to from birth, how they accomplished their escapes, and the difficulties they had in adjusting to life on S. Korea. This is my best nonfiction read of the year. It reads like a novel and in my opinion everyone should read this book. 6y
BarbaraBB It has been on my wishlist forever. Your review again convinces me I should really read this. 6y
arubabookwoman #BarbaraBB I‘m just sorry I waited so long to get to it. It‘s a stunning book, and very readable—I‘d even call it a page-turner. 6y
Liz_M It is a very good read, and I enjoyed the audiobook. 6y

Spring is finally arriving in the PNW and my garden is going wild.
I‘ve never read this one by Kadare. Anyone?

BarbaraBB I only read the tagged by him but one day I need to read this one because it is on the list of #1001books! 6y
charl08 Wow. Beautiful rose. I've not read Kadare at all. 6y
arubabookwoman #char08 Thanks. It‘s a camellia. Beautiful, but doesn‘t do well as a cut flower. It‘s petals fall off almost immediately. 6y
arubabookwoman #BarbaraBB I‘ve read #BrokenApril too, and have been wanting to read more by #Kadare every since. 6y

Blacklands: A Novel | Belinda Bauer

Mehso-so

12 year old Steven wants to locate the body of his uncle who was killed years before by a child molester. He thinks this will “fix” his dysfunctional family. After months of unsuccessful digging on the moor, he decides to go to the source. His letter to the murderer in jail sets off a game of cat and mouse. My problem with the book is that too much of it was taken up by the tedious, mundane details of a Steven‘s life before it became suspenseful.

BarbaraBB Hi Deborah! I ‘know‘ you from LT, isn‘t it? I am Simone2 over there! 6y
