Spring Flowers, Spring Frost
Spring Flowers, Spring Frost: A Novel | Ismail Kadare
10 posts | 2 read | 10 to read
In a small town at the foot of the northern highlands in Albania, a decade after the fall of the Communist regime, the harsh blood-for-blood law of the fearsome Kanun mountain folk is emerging from hibernation, like everything else that was forbidden under the fifty years of Communist rule. Mysterious happenings that are two thousand years old, two centuries old, or even just two years old reemerge in daily life. The marriage of a girl and a snake is not just a legend but a news itema cyclical event that is as much part of the modern world as of the ancient one. Set against this Kafkaesque backdrop, a simple and sensual love story between a painter and a young woman stands out as light against dark. With its rich and somber story of local traditions and universal themes, Spring Flowers, Spring Frost is a masterpiece belonging to Kadares purest classical vein.

The tagged book is on my reading list for this year, and the picture is just to brighten up an otherwise wet and blustery day here in the UK.

Spring! I‘m not normally one for planting because I have a black thumb but last spring I carelessly threw a hyacinth bulb out and look what came up! Of course, we‘ll be back to 30s and snow by Monday but this does my heart good.

Spring is finally arriving in the PNW and my garden is going wild.
I‘ve never read this one by Kadare. Anyone?

BarbaraBB I only read the tagged by him but one day I need to read this one because it is on the list of #1001books! 6y
charl08 Wow. Beautiful rose. I've not read Kadare at all. 6y
arubabookwoman #char08 Thanks. It‘s a camellia. Beautiful, but doesn‘t do well as a cut flower. It‘s petals fall off almost immediately. 6y
arubabookwoman #BarbaraBB I‘ve read #BrokenApril too, and have been wanting to read more by #Kadare every since. 6y

Happy first day of spring! Don‘t let the cherry blossoms and sunshine fool you, it‘s still cold here.

TheWordJar But so gorgeous to look at! 😍 I‘m still surrounded by death and can‘t wait for the first signs of spring! 6y

Look what finally peaked out in front of my mailbox!

The crocuses finally emerged! Yay!
... Might as well share them, because by morning they‘ll be buried in snow and gone! Boo!

Better luck next year crocuses!

slhbooks Mine will be eaten by the bunnies the day before they bloom🐇🌷🐇 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @slhbooks Bunnies are still hibernating here I think, I haven‘t seen any yet...and they‘re smart if they are since we‘re getting snow tonight 6y
SilversReviews Yippie....I had yellow ones come out in the back yard. Never got a chance to take a photo...the deer must have eaten them by the time I got there the next day. :( (edited) 6y
Suet624 I can‘t wait to see a flower. 😎 6y
