Alaska Battle of the Books High School list for 2024-2025. I am on maternity leave this semester, but I will help a bit when I‘m back in January before the battles. I am working on Sunrise over Falluja. I‘ve read Old Man and the Sea and Fighter in the Velvet gloves before.

I am enjoying Robin‘s fresh voice. It‘s almost weird to hear the youth in the voice of an Iraq War soldier since this invasion happened when I was in 5th grade. I think Meyers‘ portrayal of the confusion and lack of knowing even in the soldiers rings true.

4 ⭐ This picture book is long but feels very short. In this book Hans Christian Andersen is riding in a stagecoach with a young Elsa. He‘s talking with Elsa and entertaining her by telling her the story of his life, including all the magic he‘s created on paper. The way this story is done, it‘s both biography and a fairytale in its own right. This book is lovely and very well done.

Great read for Banned Books Week. This is my first Alaska Battle of the Books read for the year. It was quick with some major impact in the brief story. I also appreciated learning about the South Korean political struggles. I had no idea about any of the political violence and fascism so recently in their past. #Bannedbooksweek #alaskabatleofthebooks #battleofthebooks #graphicnovels #bannedbooks #teachersoflitsy

Excellent! I just picked it up tonight and love it. An Alaska HS Battle of the Books selection for the year. Also just in time for Banned Books week. I‘m reading F451 with my juniors and this book is getting me excited for my censorship lecture! #battleofthebooks #bannedbooks #Korea #GraphicNovel #teachersoflitsy

Kimberlone I want to read this! 2y

First up in my #battleofthebooks prep. We've divvied up the competition book list between the three teammates. Off to a good start. Feels really nice to be reading again. #leftonread

This book didn‘t suck but I just wasn‘t feeling it. I didn‘t really like Maleeka all that much and I just felt like the writing wasn‘t that clear at a lot of points. I‘m really disappointed by the fact my school picked this for a #BattleOfTheBooks book when it is filled with so many trigger warning worthy things. I.e, child abuse, arson, toxic friendships, suicide jokes, racism, body-shaming, and those are just the ones off the top of my head. 3⭐️

Man, am I glad I‘m done with this book. If this hadn‘t been for #BattleOfTheBooks I would have bailed before page 100. Absolutely nothing happened. 319 pages of nothing. 2⭐️

Gosh, I finally finished this. I would have bailed immediately if this hadn‘t been for #BattleOfTheBooks . There weren‘t any quotation marks around the dialogue. Why? What is the point of that? It was nearly impossible to get through, because of that, and it just felt like a knockoff Little House in the Big Woods. It did get better as it went along, though. 3⭐️

Smrloomis Ugh, no quotation marks 🤦🏻‍♀️ 😕 3y
