Kaleidoscope Eyes | Jen Bryant

Pickpick

Kaleidoscope Eyes by Jen Bryant is a novel written in verse and a fast and fun read. All that annotation is because I decided I‘m teaching it in my grade 7 class! The sections are headed by quotes from songs popular in the time setting (mostly 1968). Somehow with few words, the author captures some of the essence of the race tensions, the war tensions, and the excitement of a treasure hunt/mystery. Recommended! 4/5 stars 😁

The Kidd siblings have grown up diving down to shipwrecks and traveling the world, helping their famous parents recover everything from swords to gold doubloons from the bottom of the ocean. But after their parents disappear on the job, the kids are suddenly thrust into the biggest treasure hunt of their lives.

I read this book in one sitting! Definitely interesting story, but not a ton of depth. Light, fun book to read. I have read a lot of reviews saying the Spanish wasn‘t accurate, but since I don‘t speak Spanish it was fine.

jenreads7 Wow! Way to go! Now your “book set in South America” is ✅. 6y

What a disappointment. I read the 2nd book in the series a while back, and it was quite enjoyable, so I was glad to pick up the first book now. I shouldn't have. Nothing much happens in the first half, but you get painfully detailed descriptions of the scenery and minor activities. Then there's a questionable time travel element and a really underwhelming treasure hunt. I wish I had abandoned this book when I first felt it was going nowhere.

Look what #SHPL put together, in the kids section; tote bags with a theme, including costume and books!

⚔️☠️⚓️The word PIRATES caught my attention! So cool! ☠️⚔️⚓️

Librarianaut Costumes?!?!?! Why did I never think if that???? I mean, I've done circulating coloring kits... I'm soooooo stealing that idea for my library.. 7y

I went to return a book to the library, saw it was their monthly FOL booksale, and (because I make poor life decisions) paid my $2 entry fee and went in.

Books88 We had a FOL sale today too! I left with my arms full. 8y
Lindy Oh! I read Amy's Eyes so many years ago and it really stayed with me. 8y
silentrequiem @Lindy I had heard good things about it years ago but never read it. It looks really interesting! 8y

annamatopoetry Sophie's World is probably the most formative book of my existence. I read it when I was twelve and without it I have no idea who I would be. 8y
silentrequiem @annamatopoetry I remember you raving about it. Why I picked it up. :-) 8y
