#ChildrensClassicRead2020 DECEMBER

Seems to be an appropriate pick to end out 2020. Having chose all these books in 2019 I find it rather serendipitous.

Anyone feel free to join in I read these books with my coffee just a page or two in the mornings throughout the month.

Next years schedule of books

Butterfinger I'm so thrilled you have next year's already. 3y
TheBookHippie @Butterfinger 🤍🤍🤍 Several teachers asked me to keep it up and get them a list ASAP so here it is! 3y

An old classic #ChildrensClassicRead2020

FYI problematic text that will have to be discussed if read with younger folks. As it reads like the time it was written in. It‘d make a great discussion in literature type of talk.

TheBookHippie @rubyslippersreads oh I loved it!!! I have yet to put up my summary here 🤣 4y
rubyslippersreads I‘m still going to read it. I‘m also looking forward to The Dutch Twins (my mom read all the Twin books when she was a little girl) and especially to Hitty, one of my favorite books. 4y

#ChildrensClassicRead2020 August

In this 1765 printing of her 1749 original, Sarah Fielding (1710-68) traces the development of nine girls under the guidance of their governess, Mrs Teachum. The first English novel intended for children, the book attempts to encourage young women to pursue lives of virtue, friendship and benevolence.

TheBookHippie I also ordered a physical copy of this 4y
Butterfinger Looking forward to reading it. I was surprised that the NC Library system didn't have a copy. 4y
TheBookHippie @Butterfinger Mine either 🤷🏽‍♀️ I‘m very intrigued by the descriptions of it. And the year!! 4y

Pickpick

I ended up really loving this one! There were a couple of slow parts, but it was a lovely story. It didn‘t feel like typical British children‘s lit. There was more emotion and depth to it. I think this book will stay with me for a while. #childrensclassicread2020

Understood Betsy | Dorothy Canfield Fisher
Pickpick

Finally, an orphan who is wanted by 2sets of family members with different styles of raising children. Elizabeth Ann goes from being coddled to learning Independence with chores. And guess what? She thrives with chores and decision making. The author was a supporter of the Montessori method and you could see evidence in the book. I really enjoyed watching Betsy become brave and strong.

TheBookHippie This one was a find!!! I can‘t wait to share it with my teachers! 4y
Butterfinger @TheBookHippie yes!!! This is the best way for children to learn - by doing. I did find it strange that the math facts were being learned by rote memorization instead of manipulatives. 4y
TheBookHippie @Butterfinger I have that on the questions to ask my Montessori and regular teachers about I think it‘d be an interesting conversation all together . We have a free public school section of Montessori I help in the 1-3 grade classroom . 4y

Chrissyreadit This is required reading in Ambleside online homeschool curriculum. We loved it. 4y
TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit my son goes to a physical Ambleside Charlotte Mason classical learning school 4y
Butterfinger @Chrissyreadit @TheBookHippie I have not heard of Ambleside. 4y
TheBookHippie @Butterfinger It‘s Charlotte Mason way of learning Charlotte Mason put a heavy emphasis on using high-quality literature, which she called “living books,” to teach children. She believed that education should involve the whole person, not just the mind. According to Mason, education is “an atmosphere, a discipline, a life.” 4y
Chrissyreadit @TheBookHippie that‘s awesome! I LOVED our Charlotte Mason Curriculum. We used it for 8 years- but High School became more unschool with them focusing on interests, passions and foreign language. How lucky you are to have a physical school for your son to attend. 4y
Chrissyreadit @Butterfinger if you‘ve heard the term Living books” that would be Charlotte Mason. We read amazing books, lots of nature and science, lots of experiential learning - it is very different from traditional education. 4y
