In school, the arrival of Europeans was always the beginning of the story. This novel subverts that pattern, giving a matter-of-fact look at the culture of one island people through the eyes of two children. It's sweet and emotionally complex and ultimately sad because we know the unwritten ending to this story. The character-driven story was a new experience for my 11-year-old.

Da Vinci Code-esque puzzle thriller centering around Colombus and a hidden treasure. So far, we have visited Jamaica, Cuba, Vienna and Prague, which is fun. Airplane books are a fun way to pull my head out of the stress.
