A fascinating and well researched theory about the lost colony at Roanoke in Virginia.

The mystery of the lost colony is baked into our pop culture, & I‘ve read various theories about what may have happened. This one is well researched, well laid out, & also much less mysterious. Very slow, & the 1st half is all the context of England creating colonies in the USA, but overall a fascinating read.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

BookmarkTavern #AmericanGirlReads Definitely want to rewatch the Sleepy Hollow tv episode about the colony now though. 😅 4d
CozyBookworm I‘ve always been fascinated by the story of Roanoke. I‘ll definitely check this one out! 4d

Born.A.Reader I have this one, read it last year, and enjoyed it as well. I love learning about Roanoke. 3d

For January, our first #AmericanGirlReads is Felicity Merriman, a spunky young girl living during the American Revolution.

Here are a few ideas for books to read for her!

I‘m going for a book about colonial times and reading the tagged book, a nonfiction book about the lost Roanoke colony.

BookmarkTavern Let me know if you‘d like to be added to the tag list! https://app.thestorygraph.com/reading_challenges/decd114d-c3bf-4960-a1c3-b761b26... (edited) 2w
lauraisntwilder Can you add me to the tag list? I immediately thought of one for Felicity. 😊 2w

ferskner This sounds so fun! Please add me. 2w
BookmarkTavern @lauraisntwilder Of course! What will you be reading? @ferskner A pleasure to have you! 2w
PathfinderNicole I‘m leaning towards the tagged but haven‘t fully decided! 2w
Roary47 I was also thinking of using my #USPresidents read, but will try to sneak in Meet Felicity to my 8 year olds nighttime reading since we are here. 😅🥰 2w
BookmarkTavern @PathfinderNicole Oh that looks really fun! Can‘t wait to read your thoughts. @Roary47 What a wonderful thing to do! I was 8 when I first started reading them! 2w

Started this. It‘s about Benedict Arnold and George Washington‘s relationship during the Revolutionary War. It covers four years, starting in the spring of 1776. So far, so good. I‘ve read Philbrick‘s “Bunker Hill” and “Mayflower” and enjoyed them both.

This is full of really good information. It was a cool idea to look at the rest of the continent during the pivotal year of 1776. The British colonies turned United States were only really mentioned to point out that they made up just 4% of the continent, but they‘re all we ever hear about. Unfortunately for this book, it is dry as hell. This book is a prime example of why 99% of students hate history.

GingerAntics Saunt has managed to take relatively interesting and thought provoking information and go on for so long about it, the reader no longer cares and just wants the book to be over. #ClaudioSaunt #WestOfTheRevolution #AmericanHistory #IndigenousHistory #ColonialHistory #History 4y
RamsFan1963 That's a shame because it sounds like a really interesting topic to read about. 4y
GingerAntics @RamsFan1963 it really is. This is just overly academic and not very approachable. I wish someone would use the idea to write a popular history or something. 4y

This history of Jamestown was ultimately an interesting if uneven book. There were some parts in the middle that dragged on and made me fall asleep in less than 15 minutes, but the story picked up near the end. Most Jamestown lore focuses on Capt. John Smith and Pocahontas, but there‘s a lot more to know. I like this time in history when religious and cultural norms were in flux. And any book that features James I earns points from me! 😉👑

Apparently, in the 18th century, Russians would make fur clothing out of just about anything, including DOMESTICATED CATS!!!
