This book is amazing! Picture books are a great opportunity for talking about injustice, but few of them bring up the topic of murder. This is really a middle grade book. The illustrations are amazing. But I love seeing the kids faces when I tell them that when I wake a little girl, I was not allowed to wear pants at school, and I'm not even that old! I also describe myself as having brown hair, so...

4 ⭐If this book was written now, it would probably be banned. And I‘m not talking banned for DEI (as it is February 2025) but banned for guns. We don‘t see the guns, but a character gets shot in a duck hunting accident. I don‘t know if accidents is the right word. This book is about Elmer the duck. Elmer is just a little bit different. He is what used to be called a sissy. They like to play by themselves and play with the girls.

LibrarianRyan Not into sports, not into macho things, just into being themselves. Dad finds that hard to take, and that his son should just try to be like everybody else. But Mom knows that being special is OK. This book was lovely, it was majorly sad. You have a happy ending, but this isn‘t one of those happily ever after type endings. Because you still feel the sadness of Elmer‘s separation from his community. While I did like this book, I do see why it 3w
LibrarianRyan has not been reprinted. And being that it is exceptionally long. I mean exceptionally long for a picture book. Harvey Feinstein can write. That is no question. They are an author. But writing a picture book to be read over and over and over again, they might need a little more practice.

Players in Pigtails | Shana Corey, Rebecca Gibbon

“Girls couldn't play baseball, or can they?“ This quote challenges the stereotypes of people thinking girls can't do things.

I would use this book in my classroom to discuss women's rights and determination.

This story was published in 2003 and is historical fiction. This book tells the story of a girl who didn't love all of the things a “normal“ girl should love back in the 1940's. She loved baseball instead but no one let girls play baseball. So, she made a league of her one and how she might have played for the first ever All-American Girls Professional Baseball League

I can definitely see this book being used in my classroom. It is a great way to introduce other cultures and traditions, as well as understand more about people can overcome hardships and how to turn the hardship situation around into doing good for the world.
