Pickpick

If you hate to laugh and think humanity is great, do NOT read this #hugo2019 nominated book. If you want a story about Galactic music concert reality show being the only way to save Earth that is full of humanity-depreciating jokes and brilliantly diverse aliens, read this book. The photo is of the Flaming Lips‘ Wayne Coyne. Thank you Catherynne M Valente....Thank you.

SW-T @tournevis Yeah, difficult year to choose. 5y
tournevis @SW-T And then there's Bintin and Sugar Sky... I would not know who to choose this year. 5y

I managed only 8 hours and 35 minutes for the #24B4Monday #readathon this time around, but I succeeded in getting through more of my Hugo Voter Packet.

The Hugo Best Graphic Work category had excellent entries, including the latest volume of Paper Girls. This terrific series is like Stranger Things with time travel! #hugo2019

Thanks to @Andrew65, @TheReadingMermaid and @jb72 for hosting the readathon!

BeansPage You are very welcome and thank you for participating. We hope to have you with us again next month! 😘😘 And you did fantastic by the way 👏🙌💪🤓🎉 5y
jb72 Great time! I‘m all caught up on the Paper Girls until the next one comes out. 5y
Andrew65 That‘s still a good time, well done and thanks for taking part. 👏👏👏 5y

Working on the last novel I need to read in order to vote on best novel for Hugo Awards. Wasn‘t a fan of the first book in the series but really enjoyed the second and this one has also captured my attention. Voting may be harder than I originally thought. #hugo2019

kwmg40 I'm having a hard time deciding on my votes too. I'm not sure if Revenant Gun will go to the top of my list, but I really loved it. 5y
Carolyn11215 @kwmg40 glad to hear that I‘m not the only one grappling with how to vote! 5y

I've only been able to read 4 hours and 40 minutes so far for the #24B4Monday readathon, but I did finish my last book from the 2019 Hugo Best Novel shortlist. This one is a lot of fun, in the style of Douglas Adams.

It's been a very busy July so far, so it will be good to have a relaxing weekend devoted to reading! It'll be my last chance to read from the #hugo2019 shortlist before the Hugo Awards voting deadline on July 31.

The shortlist: http://www.thehugoawards.org/2019/04/2019-hugo-award-1944-retro-hugo-award-final...

BeansPage Hmmm 🤔 I haven't heard of that one yet. Is it relatively new? 5y
jb72 I hadn‘t even looked up the #hugo2019 nominations yet. Thanks for the reminder. I see they are doing a retro Hugo award this year too? Good luck 🍀 5y
kwmg40 @TheReadingMermaid The Hugo Awards have been around for many years but it's for science fiction and fantasy, so usually it's just SFF fans that follow it. There are some great books on the list this year that I think everyone will like, though, especially Naomi Novik's Spinning Silver! 5y

BeansPage That sounds really cool! Is there any way you can post a link to them for me? 5y
kwmg40 @jb72 Thanks! Yes, they're doing 1944 for the Retro Hugo this year. The only book I've read from this list is The Glass Bead Game, and only because it had been sitting on my shelves for years! 😄 5y
kwmg40 @TheReadingMermaid I added a link to the shortlist in the post. They have a new YA category (called the Lodestar award) this year too and I've been enjoying the books on the list. 5y
BeansPage Awesome. Thank you so much I'm going to check them out 😘🤗😘 5y
Andrew65 Good luck with the Readathon and getting to those Hugo nominees, love the idea of the retrospective year! 😊👍 5y
kwmg40 @Andrew65 Thanks! I wanted to read the retro nominees too but am still trying to get through the 2019 list. We‘ll, that‘s what the Readathon is for, right? 😄 5y

Enjoying the 2nd in the series much more than Ninefox Gambit. Working my way towards Revenant Gun which is nominated for #hugo2019 best novel.

Really enjoyed this alternate history of the beginnings of the space program, in this telling expedited because of a meteorite strike in the DC area that is an extinction event. Deals with discrimination (gender and racial) in the space program and the role of female “computer” mathematicians in making spaceflight possible. #hugo2019

Finished. Two more to go so that I can vote for #hugo2019 best novel. I liked this one...but feel like I‘d need to read a few more times to get everything out of it.

ChasingOm I‘ve got REVENANT GUN and SPINNING SILVER left. I just got SS from the library, so I‘m close! 5y
Carolyn11215 @ChasingOm have you read the first two in the revenant series? Trying to decide whether I have to read them first to give Revenant Gun a fair shake. 5y
ChasingOm I haven‘t, and that‘s why I haven‘t gotten to that one yet. 😂 Also, I‘m not sure the premise really interests me, although reading through the Hugos has surprised me with some great reads that I wouldn‘t have picked up otherwise. 5y

One of my favorite first sentences in a very long time! 4th out of 6 books I need to complete to vote in #hugo2019
