A Shadow Intelligence | Oliver Harris

I unknowingly read this series out of sequence. I‘m actually glad I did. I liked the second book but, having really enjoyed this one, I might have been disappointed. “The Shadow Intelligence” was a masterfully plotted espionage thriller. The twists were unexpected and pacing increased as the story moved the reader along toward the chaotic, crescendo ending. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Awk_Word_Smith @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I didn‘t realize it was a series and already read the 2nd one first. 3w

I thoroughly enjoyed this travelogue describing a Norwegian journalist‘s travels through #Turkmenistan, #Kazakhstan, #Tajikistan, #Kyrgyzstan, and #Uzbekistan. She describes some of the travel itself, basic history, political aspects, culture, and personal stories of people she met.

julieclair I know absolutely nothing about any of these countries. Added to my stack! (edited) 5mo
Daisey @julieclair This book has been on my TBR since I saw it posted for #ReadingAsia2021 for the same reason, but I just fairly recently found the audio and finally got to it. Definitely a worthwhile read! 5mo
BarbaraBB This was so good indeed! 5mo

jlhammar Definitely want to get to this someday as I thought Fatland's The Border was fantastic! 5mo
Daisey @BarbaraBB @jlhammar I‘ll definitely need to add her other books to my someday list. 5mo
BarbaraBB I did too. Unfortunately that day hasn‘t come yet for me 😊 but I still want to read her! 5mo

I listened to the section of this book about Kazakhstan and part of the Tajikistan section this weekend on my walks and continue to find it incredibly interesting. Additionally, I needed an excuse to share this fun up close photo of Luthien enjoying her walk.

This book has been on my TBR since I first saw it reviewed here and in my Audible library for a bit. I finally started listening on a beautiful fall walk with Luthien today and enjoyed the first section on Turkmenistan.

It was really interesting read about part of the world no one is really talking about. I've made some notes and I'm keen to learn more.

This is my chance to not only learn about the devastating results of disregard for caring for the earth, but also an opportunity to learn a bit about the geography of the “Stans” (those countries in the former Soviet Union whose names end in “stan”.) So far the scenario set by author Jeff Fearnside of the once thriving fishing community on the Aral Sea bordering both #Kazakhstan and #Uzbekistan is pretty bleak.

BarbaraBB Such an interesting area, the Stans. 2y
SqueakyChu @BarbaraBB That‘s one reason I was happy to receive this book. I know next to nothing about those countries. 2y

Erika Fatland traveled through the Central Asian former Soviet Stans and relates here her travels, some history, and current events in the area. I thought this was fascinating. She did a good job of varying the information so it didn‘t get bogged down. This was a great book to wrap up #ReadingAsia2021. #Tajikistan

Librarybelle I‘m looking forward to this one - it‘s staring at me from my shelves! 2y
BarbaraBB You finished the challenge! Fantastic! Congratulations 🎊! I have two countries left! 2y
Hooked_on_books @Librarybelle I was deterred from it for a while because it sat there looking fat and dense. But it‘s not dense at all! I more or less read a country a day, so that took care of the fatness. 2y

Am I the only one who can only think of Spies Like Us when I see Dushanbe? 😂

CharismaRaven13 Love that movie! I can‘t believe someone actually remember this movie! Dan Akroyd and Chevy Chase were a match made in heaven for this one! 2y
