Mehso-so

This book was good in the beginning, got slow in the middle, and the end was lacking in detail and not very helpful for understanding how and what TE Lawrence did. I learned a lot about TE Lawrence‘s early life, but I don‘t really understand the details of and impact of his work during WWI with Arab fighters. I wish the author had focused on that and not on introducing so many other people who Lawrence had so little interaction with.

Aimeesue @vivastory I am ridiculously happy about the little painting. It‘s getting framed and hung right next to my second best bookshelf! 11mo
Aimeesue @jlhammar Strangely thrilling, right? I have a lot of signed books, but this is the first hand painted author art I‘ve received. 🎨 (edited) 11mo
Aimeesue @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I love The little dog above her signature too ❤️ 11mo
vivastory I hope to read The Sparrow at some point in the not too distant future 11mo
Aimeesue @vivastory That was the first of her books I read. I liked it a lot, but that was YEARS ago. I wonder if it holds up? I should give it a reread at some point. I think of that book almost every time I open a new can of coffee! 😄 (edited) 11mo

Aimeesue @Ruthiella I loved The Sparrow! MDR has retired from writing now, but paints, so I thought it would be neat to have a small one to hang by my bookshelves. 🎨 11mo
Aimeesue @jlhammar That‘s one I want to read as well! 11mo

Found this book from the 1950s, telling a story of the 1920s. Didn't even try to resist 😂

The other is my new reading journal.
Can't believe l finished my first one. I started here on Litsy, when l first joined in 2017. Can't believe it's been so long 😱

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Pretty journal 📔 💚 1y
JazzFeathers @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks It's pretty different from my previous one. I can't wait to start using it 😃 1y

I loved how Anderson contextualized T.E. Lawrence‘s story and included Aaron Aaronsohn(brilliant agronomist, Zionist and spy)and his sister Sarah Aaronsohn, Curt Prüfer(German diplomat, who ran a spy ring and operations to sabotage the British, Minna Weizmann‘s lover) and William Yale(oilman and spy)in this detailed biography. Anderson shows Lawrence‘s genius and faults, is an excellent storyteller and makes historic characters come alive.

Oblomov26 This was a great book 2y
Anna40 @Oblomov26 Yes! The detailed military strategy/battle descriptions were not for me but overall a great book, I agree 2y
Oblomov26 @Anna40 if you are interested in this place and period can also recommend “A peace to end all peace” by Fromkin which provides a well written and interesting overview of how the Middle East ended like it is. 2y
Anna40 @Oblomov26 thank you!! 2y

I also realized I haven't shown all the books I bought from the Helsinki bookfair. I can't wait to get to read these. I love reading the life stories of strong women! 😍

This was my #bookspin book for May. Yay! So happy to have completed a #bookspin and #doublespin!
This was a compelling story and well-written and researched, but the history background felt forced not quite there at the same time. I picked this book to learn something about this era in history when the maps of the modern middle east were drawn, but I don't feel like I really did learn anything about the players or what was going on. ⬇

DrexEdit The author did evoke a feeling of the time really well. I was able to imagine being in early 20th century Egypt and Gaza. But the story was only framed by the historical events going on around, not about those events. So I still want to read more about this time period. It felt eerily prescient with the discussion of the creation of Israel and the aftermath of the last flu-like pandemic.
In all, an enjoyable read, so it's a pick for me!

All right Wheel of Bookish Fate! May #Bookspin is on! I will definitely read both because #18 is a lovely picture book. 😊

Dreamers of the Day is about the creation of the modern day map of the middle east, a period in history I know almost nothing about. So I'm looking forward to that!
