Lord Byron: The Major Works
Lord Byron: The Major Works | George Gordon Lord Byron
14 posts | 9 read | 2 to read
This authoritative edition brings together the complete collection of Byron's poetry and prose - all the major poems, complemented by important letters, journals, and conversations - to give the essence of his work and thinking. Byron is regarded today as the ultimate Romantic, whose name has entered the language to describe a man of brooding passion. Although his private life shocked his contemporaries his poetry was immensely popular and influential, especially in Europe. This comprehensive edition includes the complete texts of his two poetic masterpieces Childe Harold's Pilgrimage and Don Juan, as well as the dramatic poems Manfred and Cain. There are many other shorter poems and part of the satire English Bards and Scotch Reviewers. In addition there is a selection from Byron's inimitable letters, extracts from his journals and conversations, as well as more formal writings. About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

#OnThisDay in 1788, George Gordon Byron was born. Ten years later, following the death of his uncle, he gained title and lordship. Lord Byron went on to become one of the most popular and influential English Romantic poets of the 1800s with poems like Childe Harold's Pilgrimage and Don Juan. #HistoryGetsLIT

Prompt: British

Here is a classic British poem for today.

jillrhudy That Byron. One irresistible tomcat. 🐈 6y
TheSpineView @jillrhudy I had to read all his works in a romantic literature class. In the class, I found out he was quit the playboy. He loved to seduce young women. 6y

“Parting day
Dies like the dolphin, whom each pang imbues
With a new colour as it gasps away,
The last still loveliest, till 'tis gone and all is gray.”

How flipping cool is this?! I was straightening up and read the label on the chocolate bar @VelvetSpade sent and it said, "Love poem inside."
There's treasure everywhere! ?

IamIamIam @RaimeyGallant Right?! Not like chocolate isn't a treasure in and of itself, but this is an extra bonus!! 6y

He might have been a libertine in his times. Maybe his poetry & prose work sprung from that as his words were erotic for those days. His reputation was mired in scandel. Yet his work was to later become influential & inspiring to Romantic Poets. He was more than a wordsmith. He was an intellect, an outspoken politician. He voiced words for the public good. He spoke of social reform & in favor of worker's rights. He is Lord Byron. #LitsyPoetry365

Cathythoughts ❤️❤️❤️ 6y
Nute @CarolynM @Ubookquitous @Cathythoughts I think that he is under appreciated at times. He is not as intently studied as others. There is a simple eloquence about his work. There is an unfading beauty. His work feels contemporary to me with its lyrical quality. Perhaps his body of work is overshadowed by the largeness of his life because most references to him are about him and not his poetry. I love this poem and so many more of his collection.💕 (edited) 6y
CarolynM I think his popularity weighs against him in critical circles. I loved his poems about aging when I first read them as a teenager, and still do now that I'm much older than he was complaining of! "And now at thirty years my hair is grey, I wonder what it will be like at forty..." " Tis time this heart should be unmoved since others it hath ceased to move..." 6y
Nute @CarolynM Conversation over tea with you would be the best. The many things we could discuss...💜💜💜💜 6y

I chose Byron for #rhymes because he is behind some great monsters. His challenge is what helped create Frankenstein and also behind a really abysmal story called "The Vampyr" written by his doctor, Polidori. It's earlier than Dracula and Byron was the inspiration for the vampire in the story. #uncannyOctober @RealLifeReading
