The slow horses are MI 5‘s losers. They “work” in a rundown office building separated from MI 5‘s glamorous headquarters. Herron deftly created a cast of antiheroes, the plot is full of twists I didn‘t see coming. There‘s humour and action. Slow horses is a well written, clever spy novel. I already borrowed book 2 in the series.

I loved the show! Casting and acting is terrific. Thought the book might be fun, too 🤩

However, it is SO much like the show, that… I prefer watching.

The fact that I now understand this reference when it randomly appears in books almost makes The Year of Reading #Clarissa totally worth it.

Almost.

😀

TheBookHippie Almost….. 😅 3mo
Amiable @TheBookHippie We have to take our wins from that experience wherever and wherever we can, am I right? 😄 3mo
TheBookHippie @Amiable I have read it in a few books now and I didn‘t keep my brick of a book an English major wanted it and I gladly parted with it. 😂 3mo

An excellent way to spent the day. Perhaps this will be my year of spycraft? I could see it.

Ruthiella Ooh! What other authors or books would you include? 5mo
majkia I've been on a Spy kick too. 5mo
quietjenn @Ruthiella I have a lot of Helen Macinnes on my Kindle and have read very little Le Carre, so would probably start with those and go from there? Very open to suggestions though, if you recs. I am not well-read in the genre at all, but quite enjoy them! 5mo

Ruthiella @quietjenn I‘m not well read in the genre either, which is why I asked! 😂 I did read a lot of Le Carre in the ‘90s and James Bond novels in the ‘80s, but that is it, really. 5mo
quietjenn I may do a little research and will keep you posted! 5mo
BkClubCare I‘ve been on hold for this at the library for EVEH! 3mo

Good times! Definitely lighter in tone than some of the entries in this series. For all that the stakes include threats of everything from ruination of reputations, careers, to bodily injury and death, I'm pretty sure the body count was non-existent. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? As opposed to focusing on how any one particular member of Slough House is sliding further down the slippery slope of hopeless apathy and continual bad mistakes, there was a change introduced for a character that was long overdue, very satisfying from a character development/story arc perspective. 5mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? Did not see that particular 'partnership' coming, but it was a new flavour of motley crew that didn't necessarily reinforce each other's faults, so that's encouraging! 😉
I liked seeing Taverner in the mix a bit more, still curious how she's going to extricate herself from previous unwise decisions.
5mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/4 As expected, the question marks I raised regarding a certain character's fate last time still feel like they're floating around in this book, and that matches the air of intrigue for this series very well.
All caught up now, will be looking out for the next book when it's published in the coming year. Unless I get my hands on the bind-up of the interstitial novellas first...

Thank you @thegirlwiththelibrarybag for these marvellous #AussieSecretSanta gifts. The books (wonderful surprises!) look great and I love the Group of Seven photo & the gorgeous bracelets. I‘m thrilled!

LeahBergen Ooo, Group of Seven! You‘re repping Canada! 👏👏 5mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @LeahBergen, I hit the AGO gift shop pretty hard ☺️ 5mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag You are so welcome! Thanks for organising this year, it was a very nice experience just being a participant 😉. I was surprised at how few Christmas novels were in bookstores (although the Swanson one did publish last year). 5mo
CarolynM @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I had a great template to follow & good people to deal with. It all went very smoothly. I‘m glad you‘re happy with how it‘s gone too, since it‘s very much your baby😘 5mo

I love this series sooo soooo much. The characters are so interesting, screwups and fascinating as they try to save the world whilst the big boys are clueless as usual.
