Mehso-so

Ugh, how to review this little book…picked from the #NYTTopTen2022 and the reporter reviewing this recommended the audiobook.
Not straightforward enough for me to listen to the audiobook, so I definitely should have read this physical copy. Some parts I really connected with while others (mostly the “writings”) didn‘t work for me. The style is so different; I found it difficult to engage. I may come back to the physical copy again later.

Ruthiella I know she is highly admired by other writers but I don‘t care for her style. It‘s too all about nothing for me. Detailed writing about buying a potato (just making that up, but wouldn‘t be surprised if she did),😂 (edited) 1y
Chelsea.Poole @Ruthiella I just loled!!! 😂 🥔that‘s a great way to describe it! I tried but it just took way too much concentration and I need those types to be read with my eyeballs and not my ears, apparently 😝 1y
jlhammar Yeah, I could see this one not working on audio. I loved it (in print) and her previous, Pond, but I can understand why her style might be off-putting to some. 1y

Ruthiella It was a potato. We liked potatoes. We liked potatoes very much. Of course we did. We liked what we could do with them; mash, fry, boil. We bought the potato. We liked it. Yes we did. We did. 🥔 1y
Chelsea.Poole @Ruthiella 🤣🥔🤣🥔 1y
Chelsea.Poole @jlhammar I feel a tad bit like a failure for not getting this one. I did read Pond when it came out and appreciated it, but can barely remember a thing about it now, beyond that it was different and maybe something about her labia/vagina being compared to a frog…?? I‘m actually off to google that because seems like I shouldn‘t be wrong about something like that 😆 1y
BarbaraBB Love those comments. I still need to read the book though! 1y
Addison_Reads Great review. I just finished this audiobook as well and have very similar thoughts. I wish I had read a physical copy because I feel I would have enjoyed it more. The writing style made it difficult for me to follow as an audio. 1y
sarahbarnes Great review! I did like it, but I didn‘t do it on audio and feel like that might have been challenging for sure. 1y
Megabooks Yeah, I can‘t see this working as an audiobook. 1y

A unique experience in grief, over a lifetime. After the loss of her 7 year old brother, Cassandra‘s life (12 years old) is forever changed and through this immense loss is the lens in which she views the world, as she becomes an adult. Others come into her life and she is repeatedly reminded of Wayne, her brother who was lost to her and her family much too young. Perspectives change and readers are privy to another view of events. #nyttopten2022

Utterly amazing what animals are capable of, how we‘ve figured out a small bit of it, and how much more we have to learn! I already love animals and this epic work of science writing gave me a much deeper appreciation and understanding of the way animals interact with our world. Completely eye-opening, life-changing. A top pick for me and deserving of the many “best of 2022” lists it appears on. Also, fabulous audio narration! #NYTTopTen2022

Texreader Awesome review! 1y
psalva I heard about this on one of my favorite podcasts, A Way with Words. They were talking about oripulation which manatees use, from what I understand, when they meet an unfamiliar creature/object or for finding food. Great review. Stacked! 1y
Hooked_on_books This will be on my personal best of the year list. I LOVED it! 1y

Megabooks 💯 agree! 1y
TheKidUpstairs I'm SO excited for this one. I've got a gift certificate from my local that I'm going to use for this. 1y
Chelsea.Poole @TheKidUpstairs I believe @monalyisha is ok with adding to #auldlangspine lists and this 💯 would have made my list had I read it sooner!! So you could consider this a part of my list! Hope you enjoy. Fascinating stuff here. 1y
monalyisha @Chelsea.Poole I‘m definitely cool with that! I‘m also definitely adding this to my list of audio TBRs. Great review, Chelsea! 1y

Are we all living on the edge of madness? What tips the scales towards mental illness in one‘s life? How do some recover and why do others not? Aviv is fascinated with this thin line of mental illness vs mental health and explores it in the lives of herself and 5 others, each with their own chapters featuring personal diaries and extensive research. A great read, and perfect on audio. Loved it!
My first read from #NYTTopTen2022

Megabooks This was 💯💯 fascinating!! I‘m glad the NYT picked it because I still think about it. 1y
Suet624 Oooh, sounds fascinating. 1y

I‘m going to attempt the full #NYTtopten2022
Several of these were already on my radar or on hold.
Just listened to Rachel Avis‘s Strangers to Ourselves and it was great! May make my top of the year list as well.

DivineDiana I‘m thinking that is a great reading goal! 1y
AmyG Good for you! I thought about it, but I will just read the two I actually own…Candy House amd Demon Copperhead. Good luck! 1y

Deblovestoread I own 3 Trust, Candy House and Immense World and 3 others are on my TBR, Demon Copperhead, Checkout 19 and We Don‘t Know Ourselves. So many lists, so many books, not near enough time. 😂 1y
BarbaraBB I am taking a screenshot! 1y
DivineDiana @BarbaraBB So funny! I just did that! 1y
BarbaraBB @DivineDiana Ha! It seems a good idea and I can‘t read the NYT any longer without paying. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y
