Demon Copperhead
Demon Copperhead: A Novel | Barbara Kingsolver
Kingsolver is a writer who can help us understand and navigate the chaos of these times. Minneapolis Star Tribune From the New York Times bestselling author of Unsheltered and Flight Behavior, a brilliant novel which enthralls, compels, and captures the heart as it evokes a young heros unforgettable journey to maturity. Anyone will tell you the born of this world are marked from the get-out, win or lose. Demon Copperhead is set in the mountains of southern Appalachia. Its the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead fathers good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. In a plot that never pauses for breath, relayed in his own unsparing voice, he braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities. Many generations ago, Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield from his experience as a survivor of institutional poverty and its damages to children in his society. Those problems have yet to be solved in ours. Dickens is not a prerequisite for readers of this novel, but he provided its inspiration. In transposing a Victorian epic novel to the contemporary American South, Barbara Kingsolver enlists Dickens anger and compassion, and above all, his faith in the transformative powers of a good story. Demon Copperhead speaks for a new generation of lost boys, and all those born into beautiful, cursed places they cant imagine leaving behind.

Just as Charles Dickens used his stories to shed light on the societal ills of his time, so Kingsolver uses this revamped tale to emphasize the pervasiveness of the opioid crisis. I feel that it‘s a little like cheating—she never had to work out which characters get together, die, etc. Dickens did that! I loved figuring out each character‘s mirror in David Copperfield, though. It also lacks the humor Dickens weaves throughout. Still loved it!! ❤️

61/100

NYTs Books has put out a readers choice 100 for those who spoke loudly about hating the first list!

I have read more on this list 61 to the 48 of the official list. There are a lot of overlapping books

I am out of free articles but you can find the full list on Instagram - NYTBooks

Deblovestoread This is a better list by far. I‘ve read 64, 2 others were DNF and 15 are on my shelves. (edited) 1w
ChaoticMissAdventures @Deblovestoread I just think that "best" is such a subjective word. Is it best because a lot of people read it? Is it best if people enjoyed it? Does it have to change the literary scene? And does it have to be written well? I think there are a lot of books on the other list that there could be arguments made for just depending on how you consider the word "best" 1w
Deblovestoread I agree 100%. My best of is all wrapped up with my experience and perceptions which is not going to be the same as anyone else. 1w
See All 7 Comments
Kitta 40/100 but much better than my 29 on the other list. I‘ve got quite a few on my tbr list as well 1w
IndoorDame Interesting! I‘ve read about twice as many of these, and have WAY more from this list on my physical shelves/kindle waiting to be read. But Ive DNF, disliked and found super forgettable about the same number. And the last list had lots of titles I‘d never heard of and was interested in reading and this list has almost none. 7d
ChaoticMissAdventures @IndoorDame how many of the DNFs were crossovers? They said there were something like 39 duplicates on the readers choice list 6d
IndoorDame @ChaoticMissAdventures 1 proper DNF crossover, and 3 show up on both lists that I put aside and likely will pick up again someday 6d

I cannot lie. I had a hard time getting through this, because the story is so painful in many ways. I understand why it was chosen for the Pulitzer Prize, however, because the writing is absolutely phenomenal. I‘m glad I read it—and especially glad that I made it to the end, as it took some wild turns in the last 100 pages.

“A ten-year-old getting high on pills. Foolish children. This is what we're meant to say: Look at their choices, leading to a life of ruin. But lives are getting lived right now, this hour, down in the dirty cracks between the toothbrushed nighty-nights and the full grocery carts, where those words don't pertain. Children, choices. *Ruin,* that was the labor and materials we were given to work with.“

A lot of meat and potatoes in this story to digest but still a good read. It reminded me in a sense of the Goldfinch with the coming of age story of a boy where you get to voyeuristically follow their life through hell and back. Just a warning, it‘s a long book but definitely a story that will stick with me for a bit.

Set in southern Appalachia, a heart wrenching story of a young boy born to a single mum in a trailer park. Told in Damon‘s words he lives through child labour, foster care, high school and crushing losses.
This book is full of anger, hate and compassion, yet tells the story of the need to be loved. It features drug use and how its effects can wreck lives of loved ones. It is a depressing read but there is beauty within it too.

This loose retelling of David Copperfield explores life in Lee County through the eyes of a young boy nicknamed Demon. From his addict mother to the cruel injustices of the foster care system & drug addiction, the book will break your heart. But it's also so beautifully written & the voice feels so authentic, that you don't care. I wish I‘d read it sooner instead of dragging my feet.

“As a kid, you just accept different worlds w/different rules.”

AvidReader25 @BkClubCare A few reasons, one was SO much hype. Another is that David Copperfield is my favorite Dickens and I was worried it would park in comparison. Instead, I felt like it was a completely unique story that stood on it‘s own. 3mo

I can‘t decide if Barbera Kingsolver is a literary genius or a whack that scored a book deal. This is the first book by her that I‘ve managed to get through and it was a ride for sure. Not a roller coaster per se, more of a train without tracks or speed control that occasionally punches you in the face and also can put you to sleep. But it took me over two weeks to get through it. Maybe it‘s a metaphor for the long journey of addiction?

At one point I almost bailed on this, but I decided to keep going. I‘m glad I did, because I ended up loving it.

KAO Good to hear, since I am just about 120 pages in on this one. I‘ve had a hard time connecting with this book, but I think I am finally getting into it. It was helpful to me to learn that it‘s sort of a modern twist on David Copperfield. 3mo
KadaGul Some books can be challenging and push us beyond our limits. There is no shame in deciding to stop reading them and move on. However, if we hang in there a little longer, it can be worth it. Although this may only happen a few times, the number of books we do not finish or bail on can add up.#NoShameInBailing (edited) 3mo
Hooked_on_books I struggled to get into it initially, but I felt like it picked up after a bit and was quite compelling (though I hated the ending). 3mo

Somebody felt neglected 🙄🐈
I don‘t know how I feel finishing this monster of a book. In terms of size and being a sort of memoir. Children born into a drug family and how that influenced his every decision in life. How that kept building up on everything going on in his life. Made me feel angry at the foster program, as it failed this kid over and over again. Book to make you think about a system that is said to be amazing, but actually fails.

What are your favorite audiobooks? 📚 🎧

#LitsyLove

TheBookHippie Honestly Judy Blume books read by the author ♥️🙃🙂. Grandbaby Hippie and I love picture books on CD in the car as he looks at the pictures and the narrator describes the pictures and reads the story. 🙂🙃🙂our library has a ton and thankfully my Audi has a CD player 🙃🙂😅 (edited) 4mo
ChaoticMissAdventures I love anything with a full cast! Open and Nev, and Devolution by Max Brooks were great ones for that. There are also narrators I like - Bahni Turpin, Robin Miles, Stephen Fry, Neil Gaiman, Dion Graham , Adjoa Andoh, Adam Lazarre-White. I often look them up to see what they have read and will find books that way.

If you haven't listened to one before, I recommend starting with something light, like a contemporary romance, light mystery, or the Judy Blume books Christine recommended. 4mo

I loved my second book of 2024, and I'm still thinking about it! The main character has such a distinct and compelling voice, and the setting comes alive as a character in its own right. It was fantastic on audio! I read David Copperfield in 2023, and I'm glad I did, because I absolutely loved how Kingsolver engaged with it and added depth and nuance to it while bringing it into a modern context. A tough read, but not without tenderness and hope.

A hard, hard read, but good. If the narrator hadn't been so dissociated from the experiences throughout his entire young life, I don't know if I could have hung on to the end. Fictional, yes, but every single problematic, traumatic, thing this kid went through is what too many have experienced. The accolades for this book are well-deserved.
