Demon Copperhead
Demon Copperhead: A Novel | Barbara Kingsolver
Kingsolver is a writer who can help us understand and navigate the chaos of these times. Minneapolis Star Tribune From the New York Times bestselling author of Unsheltered and Flight Behavior, a brilliant novel which enthralls, compels, and captures the heart as it evokes a young heros unforgettable journey to maturity. Anyone will tell you the born of this world are marked from the get-out, win or lose. Demon Copperhead is set in the mountains of southern Appalachia. Its the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead fathers good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. In a plot that never pauses for breath, relayed in his own unsparing voice, he braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities. Many generations ago, Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield from his experience as a survivor of institutional poverty and its damages to children in his society. Those problems have yet to be solved in ours. Dickens is not a prerequisite for readers of this novel, but he provided its inspiration. In transposing a Victorian epic novel to the contemporary American South, Barbara Kingsolver enlists Dickens anger and compassion, and above all, his faith in the transformative powers of a good story. Demon Copperhead speaks for a new generation of lost boys, and all those born into beautiful, cursed places they cant imagine leaving behind.

Set in southern Appalachia, a heart wrenching story of a young boy born to a single mum in a trailer park. Told in Damon‘s words he lives through child labour, foster care, high school and crushing losses.
This book is full of anger, hate and compassion, yet tells the story of the need to be loved. It features drug use and how its effects can wreck lives of loved ones. It is a depressing read but there is beauty within it too.

This loose retelling of David Copperfield explores life in Lee County through the eyes of a young boy nicknamed Demon. From his addict mother to the cruel injustices of the foster care system & drug addiction, the book will break your heart. But it's also so beautifully written & the voice feels so authentic, that you don't care. I wish I‘d read it sooner instead of dragging my feet.

“As a kid, you just accept different worlds w/different rules.”

Tamra I can smell those lilacs through my screen! 💜 5d
AvidReader25 @Tamra my absolute favorite flower! 5d
BkClubCare Ok, realizing that life and “so many books, etc” WHY did you drag your feet? Just curious 4d
AvidReader25 @BkClubCare A few reasons, one was SO much hype. Another is that David Copperfield is my favorite Dickens and I was worried it would park in comparison. Instead, I felt like it was a completely unique story that stood on it‘s own. 3d
BkClubCare @AvidReader25 😎 (I felt the misery was relentless. Not a fan of the book myself) 3d

Mehso-so

I can‘t decide if Barbera Kingsolver is a literary genius or a whack that scored a book deal. This is the first book by her that I‘ve managed to get through and it was a ride for sure. Not a roller coaster per se, more of a train without tracks or speed control that occasionally punches you in the face and also can put you to sleep. But it took me over two weeks to get through it. Maybe it‘s a metaphor for the long journey of addiction?

At one point I almost bailed on this, but I decided to keep going. I‘m glad I did, because I ended up loving it.

KAO Good to hear, since I am just about 120 pages in on this one. I‘ve had a hard time connecting with this book, but I think I am finally getting into it. It was helpful to me to learn that it‘s sort of a modern twist on David Copperfield. 6d
KadaGul Some books can be challenging and push us beyond our limits. There is no shame in deciding to stop reading them and move on. However, if we hang in there a little longer, it can be worth it. Although this may only happen a few times, the number of books we do not finish or bail on can add up.#NoShameInBailing (edited) 6d
Hooked_on_books I struggled to get into it initially, but I felt like it picked up after a bit and was quite compelling (though I hated the ending). 6d

Somebody felt neglected 🙄🐈
I don‘t know how I feel finishing this monster of a book. In terms of size and being a sort of memoir. Children born into a drug family and how that influenced his every decision in life. How that kept building up on everything going on in his life. Made me feel angry at the foster program, as it failed this kid over and over again. Book to make you think about a system that is said to be amazing, but actually fails.

What are your favorite audiobooks? 📚 🎧

#LitsyLove

TheBookHippie Honestly Judy Blume books read by the author ♥️🙃🙂. Grandbaby Hippie and I love picture books on CD in the car as he looks at the pictures and the narrator describes the pictures and reads the story. 🙂🙃🙂our library has a ton and thankfully my Audi has a CD player 🙃🙂😅 (edited) 3w
ChaoticMissAdventures I love anything with a full cast! Open and Nev, and Devolution by Max Brooks were great ones for that. There are also narrators I like - Bahni Turpin, Robin Miles, Stephen Fry, Neil Gaiman, Dion Graham , Adjoa Andoh, Adam Lazarre-White. I often look them up to see what they have read and will find books that way.

3w
Sparklemn I love anything read by the author - Ross Gay, Ann Patchett, the Obamas. 3w

marleed Ann Patchett has Oscar winning actors narrating her books! Meryl Streep for Tom Lake. Tom Hanks for the Dutch House. Then of course The full cast of TJR‘s Daisy Jones and the Six. 2w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I really enjoyed this one that I listened to last year. The Mountains Sing was very good, too, though I recommend looking online for a preview to look at the family tree. If you haven't listened to one before, I recommend starting with something light, like a contemporary romance, light mystery, or the Judy Blume books Christine recommended. 2w
CoffeeK8 I loved Trever Noah‘s book and Lauren Graham‘s memoir. Also Brene brown‘s books are great as audio books 2w

I loved my second book of 2024, and I'm still thinking about it! The main character has such a distinct and compelling voice, and the setting comes alive as a character in its own right. It was fantastic on audio! I read David Copperfield in 2023, and I'm glad I did, because I absolutely loved how Kingsolver engaged with it and added depth and nuance to it while bringing it into a modern context. A tough read, but not without tenderness and hope.

A bit of a wild ride through this one. I enjoyed it. It did feel heavy for me at times—as I have experienced abused and addiction in my own life. It led me to reminiscing some and got personally dreary for a little bit. Thankful for the whole storyline and how things wrapped up in the end.

A hard, hard read, but good. If the narrator hadn't been so dissociated from the experiences throughout his entire young life, I don't know if I could have hung on to the end. Fictional, yes, but every single problematic, traumatic, thing this kid went through is what too many have experienced. The accolades for this book are well-deserved.

A heart wrenching account of the care system during the height of the opioid scandal. Likeable, complex, full of heart & shame Demon is an engaging character that carried the story in tense fever pitch mode for 500+ pgs. As a reworking of David Copperfield it is a genius novel of powerful themes, questions around social justice & fate, but even if you put that genius aside the story is brilliant & Lee County will stay with you for along time.

Very important poll:
Do you use this expression - Holy Roller - and if so, where did you grow up?
I really thought this was specific just to my childhood, and was gobsmacked to find it in a Women‘s Prize winning novel.

Chrissyreadit it was commonly used for people who used a specific way of worship- i think Born Again Christian‘s - 3mo
vivastory I grew up in the midwest. It was a very common expression (along with “bible thumper“). I don't hear the latter too often anymore, but holy roller is not uncommon even in metropolitan KC 3mo
MelAnn In the Texas Panhandle growing up I heard this expression a lot. 3mo

CatLass007 I grew up in West Virginia. My Dad used the expression to describe overly religious people. If you‘ve ever read the book MASH, Duke used the term to describe one of the chaplains they‘d dubbed “Shakin‘ Sammy.” 3mo
JamieArc Yes, definitely. Growing up in evangelical churches, this was a term heard frequently enough. 3mo
JamieArc One of the things I liked about this book were very specific cultural references. Among them, the trend to do a zig zag part for girls in the 90s. That one hit home 😂 3mo

It sits heavy on my heart and maybe this is why… It had the flow of a depression era coming of age story, but Demon is a millennial. Somehow, this telling makes generational poverty and the near impossibility of avoiding or overcoming drug addiction nearly impossible. I rooted for Demon from beginning to end.

My favorite 2023 reads! 📚

I read a total of 30 books this year. This is the fifth year in a row that I haven‘t met my reading goal, but that‘s okay. I still enjoy reading, which is the most important thing, and it‘s my favorite past time. My almost 2-year-old seems to enjoy books and reading just as much as me, which makes my heart so happy ❤️

But I have feeling 2024 is my year, and I might just meet my goal again!

ChaoticMissAdventures I always like to say it isn't the number but the quality. As long as you are picking up books you love to read you are winning! And 30 is so much more than most people. That is over 2 a month! Some people don't read 2 a year 4mo
dabbe #ditto what @ChaoticMissAdventures said. You came, you saw, you read! #yahooyou! 🖤💙🖤 4mo
BittersweetBooks @ChaoticMissAdventures @dabbe thank you both for the reminder!! 😊 4mo

Thank you @Singout for such an interesting and varied list of special reads for #auldlangspine. I‘ve chosen three from your list - I‘ve tried to pick three very different things! Cant wait now to dive right in ! Happy New Year

rachaich Demon Copperhead was fantastic. I've started Excellent Women but got sidetracked by other books. It's reminded me to restart it:) 4mo
Singout Happy New Year to you too, Mitch! I‘m starting your list with On the Savage Side (the audiobook that‘s available right now Toronto!) It looks intriguing! 4mo
Singout Excellent Women was an Auld Lang Spine from @TheBookHippie : she very kindly sent me her used copy to give to my mother, who then sent it to my sister in England! (edited) 4mo
