Demon Copperhead
Demon Copperhead: A Novel | Barbara Kingsolver
Kingsolver is a writer who can help us understand and navigate the chaos of these times. Minneapolis Star Tribune From the New York Times bestselling author of Unsheltered and Flight Behavior, a brilliant novel which enthralls, compels, and captures the heart as it evokes a young heros unforgettable journey to maturity. Anyone will tell you the born of this world are marked from the get-out, win or lose. Demon Copperhead is set in the mountains of southern Appalachia. Its the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead fathers good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. In a plot that never pauses for breath, relayed in his own unsparing voice, he braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities. Many generations ago, Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield from his experience as a survivor of institutional poverty and its damages to children in his society. Those problems have yet to be solved in ours. Dickens is not a prerequisite for readers of this novel, but he provided its inspiration. In transposing a Victorian epic novel to the contemporary American South, Barbara Kingsolver enlists Dickens anger and compassion, and above all, his faith in the transformative powers of a good story. Demon Copperhead speaks for a new generation of lost boys, and all those born into beautiful, cursed places they cant imagine leaving behind.

I started the year with this novel and it‘s possible it‘ll be the best read of 2023. Written with deft insight into the Appalachian culture so awfully crippled by an opiate crisis - mostly recognized by the drug OxyContin, the story is told from the razor sharp wit and tragedy of young Demon born in Lee County, Virginia. The writing makes you laugh and also cry, there‘s so much depth and character it keeps Kingsolver up there with the best! 5⭐️‘s

Fantastic and immersive trip through the opioid crisis, and what's it like to truly be poor in the country. Strong symbolism around the ocean/water provided a steady and bright canvas that allowed the characters to go dark and be confused as they found their way through their stories. So many great characters, including the mountain setting itself.

perfectsinner I've been on the fence about trying this one 🤔 6h
OutAndAbout @perfectsinner I waffled too. Wasn‘t sure I was in for such a long book that sounded so depressing. But I‘m so glad I told the chance. The pure craftsmanship of how Kingsolver tells the story is worth the trip. While the story isn‘t an easy ride, the characters are ones you want to succeed, people you won‘t forget that may show you a side of the world you haven‘t seen before. It is an emotional investment, and one I recommend at least trying. 6h

This is great, sprawling, epic storytelling. Kingsolver takes all the best parts of the Dickens original and shapes them into an incisive critique of US society, the capitalist drivers of pharmaceutical corporations, and indeed the broader economy. Demon‘s life is littered with trauma and misfortune, manufactured by social and economic deprivation. In spite of this, there are glimmers of hope all throughout this novel.

Getting a little reading done before heading out for a day of exploring on Kauai, HI. No way I‘m asking my sweetie to haul my hardback tome around! Friends letting us stay in their studio for 12 days. A respite for both of us after my month of radiation treatments for breast cancer. I think it is as rough on the partner/family as it is on the patient. So I won‘t make him haul my book on his back! I do have books on my phone. 😂😂😂

Love love LOVED this!! If Kingsolver hadn‘t already been one of my favorite authors, this would have made her so. So incredibly good! Demon‘s voice is one of the greats (and audio narrator Charlie Thurston brought it to life beautifully). I literally clutched my chest after the last line out of pure love and also sadness that it was over. (Much to my surprise, I actually kind of want to read David Copperfield now!)

SamAnne I‘m reading right now and loving it. Such poetic language. Hoping to,read David Copperfield next! 3d
Christine @SamAnne Yes, the language is so good. I look forward to your review of DC if you do get to it! It‘s been a minute since I‘ve read a classic of that heft, so I‘m a bit intimidated! 2d

Book 13

Demon Copperhead is a novel that's an in-depth character analysis of the title character, written by him. Demon grows up in Appalachia with a mother who's an addict and eventually overdoses; he spends the rest of his childhood in foster care, unwanted by the only people he knows. It's extremely well-written, clever, and witty, but it's lengthy. His voice doesn't retain the same level of charm into adulthood.

#copperheads At times this was tough and depressing, but at the same time felt important. Demon with his many faults is a lovable character. Kingsolver really captured the sense of a rural community. I really liked the bigger theme of Appalachia and land vs money that Tommy added to the story! And while I don‘t need a happy ending to like a book, I appreciated how this one wrapped up!

Damon‘s story of growing up in Lee County, VA had me hooked from the beginning. Kingsolver had empathy for each of the characters and drew them as whole people. she examines what has made Appalachians vulnerable to the ravages of pills and hopelessness a broken social services system, and tells a humane story of the people here. The language in the book was so beautiful. Loved it all but especially Angus and Annie and Mr Armstrong.

⬇ ⬇#Copperheads @Cinfhen 5⭐

This is a phenomenal retelling of Dickens David Copperfield masterfully brought into the 21st century. Kingsolver uses the framework of Copperfield's story set to the problems of our society. Her story is set in the Appalachian mountains and surrounding areas. Her hero, Demon Copperhead, is followed through childhood towards adulthood as he handles all manner of difficulties and triumphs.
⬇ ⬇

AllDebooks The cast that supports his story is as extraordinary as he is. Kingsolver rages against the unfairness of our modern age, poverty, inequality, lack of opportunities, alcohol and drug addiction. A particular thread explores the scandal of oxycontin misuse. It is quite tragic, scandalous and infuriating that so many of our contemporary problems reflect those of Dickens time, still, after all this time. As always, Kingsolver writes evocatively about 2w
AllDebooks about the natural world, so much so that it almost stands as a constant character, in itself.
The book is a delight to read as a standalone story or with a knowledge of David Copperfield.

Oh I loved this! Demon as a narrator was just heartbreakingly gorgeous - self-aware but also naive to the world around him.

This is my favourite Kingsolver book; it felt almost autobiographical and I learned so much about Appalachia and the opioid crisis, but it was less preachy and less didactic than some of her other novels.

Foster care, opioids, then a big political message at the end about hillbillies and the extraction economy. I thought it might be too much of a downer but it was laugh out loud funny sometimes (Jesus Christ on a stick) and almost exhilarating at the end. Glorious.

Griffin took a nap next to me earlier today while I was reading. Being in the mental health field & in Kentucky, I‘ve heard versions of Demon‘s story many times, except for the extreme foster care situations. I see a lot of kids who have a parent using, in jail, or dead. A lot being raised by grandparents. Some fortunate ones whose parent recovers & is able to be in their life again. I hope Demon‘s story allows others to empathize & increase 👇

Scochrane26 their understanding of substance abuse/poverty/culture/foster kids. I flagged a few passages about addiction & the poor pay of social workers. This book is amazing, & I‘m very happy BK chose to tell it from Demon‘s perspective. #copperheads @Cinfhen (edited) 3w

This book held me under a spell. I was completely enveloped in Demon‘s world and circumstances. Kingsolver set out to rewrite a modern take on an old classic and while I‘m not 💯 familiar with David Copperfield, you can feel the homage on every page. The writing at times gorgeous, is also so evocative of the 90‘s & early aughts. Demon sheds light on the opioid crisis plaguing Appalachia with love and tenderness for the people & place.

So apparently I‘m like fourth or fifth on the list for Demon Copperhead at the public library @Cinfhen so the question to all on the buddy read, shall I go out and buy it or wait till it‘s my turn from my local library? Hmm?

Cinfhen It‘s an excellent book but it‘ll still be excellent in a month (or 2) from now…. I will say, it‘s a book worth owning ❤️ It‘s really a matter of how impatient you are 😉 Good luck with your decision xx 3w
AmyG That‘s your call. It‘s a wonderful book and like @cinfhen said, a book worth owning. 3w
Cuilin Thanks @AmyG @Cinfhen I went to my local bookstore today and they were out. So I guess I‘m waiting no matter what. 😏 3w
See All 9 Comments
AmyG Wow…the bookstore was out. Getting very popular with word going around. 3w
Cinfhen @Deblovestoread also mentioned she couldn‘t find a copy and even with Amazon she has to wait more than a week to get a copy- no overnight prime @AmyG at least you‘re only a few weeks wait @Cuilin @bluebird was some crazy number like #1100 on online for her library ebook copy!!! This book is really resonating with readers!!!! 3w
Bluebird Omg! The bookstore was out! That‘s crazy! I‘m now down to 1099th in line for the ebook. But only 581st for the audio. 😂 i was also hoping to join the Jan read, but not likely. 3w
Cuilin @Bluebird at this rate, we could read David Copperfield by the time our library waits are ready. 😆 3w
Cuilin @Cinfhen I was trying to avoid Amazon or Target but I‘m so eager to read it now. 3w
Bluebird @Cuilin 😂😂 so true! 3w

I know a lot of Littens have recently read/are reading Kingsolver's latest. I have yet to read it, but the following video popped up in my subscriptions a couple of days ago & I thought I'd share. It's an hr long conversation between Kingsolver & Silas House from the Center of Fiction:

🌟Very unpopular opinion but I just can‘t continue. 2 weeks to get to page 200. This read has been a chore and there are too many others to read. Ive read her before and felt the same way. I just don‘t think Kingsolver is for me.

Bklover I can‘t even count how many time I‘ve tried to read The Poisonwood Bible! I don‘t seem to be able to read her either. So you aren‘t alone! (I‘ll give this a try at some point though!) (edited) 3w

Still sharing my week with Demon. I‘ve been reading this book a little slowly as I want to savor the words & fully immerse myself in Demon‘s world. I felt similarly when I read The PoisonWood Bible. I‘ve also been experimenting with brewing my own tea from ingredients in my fridge & cupboard. 😁This pot was clementines, lemon, Cranberries, mint, cinnamon sticks and apple.

AllDebooks I've been doing the same, completely absorbed in Demon's world. Your tea sounds delicious 😊 3w
AvidReader25 I can‘t wait to read this one! 3w
Chelsea.Poole Yes to the savoring with this one! Also your tea sounds great 😊 3w

Cinfhen My tea is really delightful and this book is just enveloping me @AllDebooks @AvidReader25 @Chelsea.Poole 3w
LeeRHarry Tea sounds delicious! Have a feeling I‘ll be buying the book at the airport and reading it on the plane home 😊 seeing as it‘s around a 30hr flight incl. stopovers I should get a bit read 😄 3w
Cinfhen Safe travels @LeeRHarry iDemon should make a great flight companion - it‘s just a bit heavy 😉 3w
sarahbarnes Love that tea strategy - and the teacup! 3w
TrishB That tea sounds like it will go wonderfully 😁 3w
AvidReader25 @BkClubCare what if we did this one for our second buddy read this year? I‘ve heard nothing but great things! Sounds like one that would be great to be able to discuss together. 3w
squirrelbrain It‘s so good isn‘t it?! And you‘re right…it‘s not a book to rush. 3w
Deblovestoread I‘ve been seeing all the love so decided I‘d jump onboard. Can‘t find a copy locally in either of our two Indy bookstores or Target. Husband is checking Costco this am. Amazon can‘t deliver until late next week. I think the word is out how good this book is… 3w
Megabooks Perfect for a winter day! 💕💕 3w
BarbaraBB Looking so peaceful ❤️❤️ 3w
Cinfhen Thanks @sarahbarnes @TrishB @Megabooks @BarbaraBB Mug was from the original #MugLove swap from the lovely @Kalalalatja (who I miss terribly) but I think of her often 💖 I spent most of today with this book - really wonderful @Deblovestoread I‘d send you my copy but it could take weeks!!! 3w
Cinfhen 💯 buddy-read @AvidReader25 and @BkClubCare I think you‘d find LOTS to discuss and share💕 3w
Cinfhen I‘m happy I focused on print @squirrelbrain it worked better for me that way but I did find two typos!!! 🙃 3w
BkClubCare @Cinfhen @AvidReader25 - yes, yes…. And yet, this book intimidates me like none other. I do not want to commit to this in the near further and do not want to hold you back Melissa - from reading it now if you want to. #sigh 3w
AvidReader25 @BkClubCare Ha, I totally get that! Let‘s stick with Once and Future King. Maybe we think about the new King: Fairy Tale? 3w
BkClubCare @AvidReader25 - I am always up for a King-along 😆 3w

Hey #Cooperheads how are you coming along?? I‘m about halfway through. Thank GD some of the misery has subsided although I‘m sure more is waiting around the corner. I read an interview with BK and she said her goal was to “generate empathy in readers for people they don‘t know well and maybe have misunderstood.” 💯 she‘s succeeding IMHO. What do y‘all think???

See All 26 Comments
TrishB Agree totally. Definitely a reminder to question stereotypes. 4w
Cinfhen Exactly @TrishB ❣️ 4w
squirrelbrain I think, from what I‘ve read so far, that the child‘s perspective shows us how people become what they are through no fault of their own, but from circumstances they are put in by others, and by society, thereby giving us an understanding of how this may happen. (edited) 4w
KathyWheeler I agree that she‘s succeeded in what she set out to do. 4w
Cinfhen Yesssss! It‘s the first thought we get from Demon @squirrelbrain and it‘s definitely playing over & over 4w
Cinfhen @KathyWheeler I didn‘t know she‘s from Appalachia - did you ? 4w
Chelsea.Poole Very well put @squirrelbrain and I agree!! 4w
Chelsea.Poole Welllll…it‘s interesting to me (I was just mentioning this at work while singing this book‘s praises) because I live in Appalachia, have my whole life, and came of age when Demon did. Many of his references are childhood memories of mine. Though I was lucky to have a stable home, with an incredible mother, very close family members, classmates, and friends could be Demon. So this book feels like home to me and a perspective I‘ve witnessed. Cont⬇️ 4w
Chelsea.Poole To touch on what @squirrelbrain says about innocent children getting caught up in these circumstances and becoming players themselves—this is a cycle and one that I‘ve witness play out over generations in my area. To the point though, I do love that this book is being widely read by many, and I think Kingsolver has done an excellent job of putting us squarely in Demon‘s shoes. 4w
Cinfhen It‘s amazing how many stereotypes exists based on region @Chelsea.Poole and unfortunately I feel many kids find themselves in Demon‘s shoes by sheer circumstance. This book is a wonderful wake-up call!! 4w
Scochrane26 @cinfhen Kingsolver is from Carlisle, Kentucky & now lives near Abingdon, VA, which if you remember is where one of the major trials about OxyContin happened. Some of Kentucky isn‘t actually in Appalachia but might as well be, based on culture/poverty. This story is familiar to me because of kids I work with, both in Lexington & rural areas. Except that foster parents are better than the ones in the book. (edited) 4w
AmyG So I wanted to look at pictures of the area we are reading about and came across a photographer….Stacy Kranitz. I follow her on instagram now and her workis beautiful. Here is an article about her https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/12/stacy-kranitz-photography-book... 4w
AmyG I do feel empathetic. There are so many kind people in this book just trying to live their lives…like any other place in the world yet are victims of their circumstances. @Chelsea.Poole yes, generational. Aside from Demon‘s story, I found this fascinating as I had no idea about this part of the country. 4w
Cinfhen Thanks for the link @AmyG going to check it out now 💚 4w
Cinfhen @Scochrane26 I‘m really relieved to hear that your experience working with foster parents have been more positive because what I‘ve read so far in this book broke my heart 💔 4w
Chelsea.Poole @amyg The library where I work owns a copy of a book by Kranitz...we were contacted by someone (maybe the artist or the marketing dept?) who wanted to donate it as the book contains photographs of our region. I'm familiar...and have mixed feelings. Though the photos are gorgeous, all I see is bleakness, when I know there is so much more to our area and people. (edited) 4w
Cinfhen I was just thinking @Chelsea.Poole after reading the article that while the photos are incredibly artistic they do seem to highlight the stereotypes we‘ve been talking about🤷🏼‍♀️ 4w
AmyG @Chelsea.Poole Yes, that was my thought, too. That the pictures were all bleak. There was no balance. @Cinfhen I found all this fascinating that while trying to dispel the stereotypes they were in fact reinforcing them. (edited) 4w
AmyG I think the photos I liked the most were of the beauty of the landscape. 4w
Cinfhen Agreed, the first photo of the landscape was just STUNNING @AmyG 4w
Kristin_Reads I *do* feel empathy for Demon and his friends, though I‘m not very familiar with Appalachia, nor the stereotypes. What‘s striking to me is the structure and the writing. There‘s just so much here. 3w
Cinfhen This book is going to become a modern day classic @Kristin_Reads for the very ideas you struck upon…structure and writing! There is SO MUCH going on yet it‘s not overwhelming or complicated. It‘s just masterfully crafted. It‘s reminding me of another book by Kingsolver that I LOVED 3w
Kristin_Reads @Cinfhen I agree that it will be a modern classic. I predict this will win some awards… 3w

When your first finished book of the year is amazing. I can only repeat what others have said, that this is a worthy emotional roller coaster of a read.
The Waterstones special edition has an essay at the end from the author explaining how she came to write it- which is a joy in itself and really interesting.

AmyG I was thinking yesterday that I should read David Copperfield. Then I thought…nah. I read the book first then I read a synopsis of David Copperfield on sparknotes. I was pretty shocked at the similarities. My advice…..read Demon Copperhead without knowledgeable of D Copperfield. Avoid spoilers. 1mo
SamAnne I‘m planning to read both! Or try….. 1mo
mcctrish I might listen to David Copperfield ( I want to say I watched a pbs show a million years ago) and I‘m anxiously awaiting delivery of my copy of Demon I ordered 1mo
gossamerchild Yeah, if you want to avoid spoilers I'd say wait to read David Copperfield. That was my very first Dickens and probably still my favorite. Might be fun to read it after this. So far I adore this book. It's so different from her other stuff, but still good. 1mo
Cinfhen I agree this book feels different than her previous books @gossamerchild and im loving it too!! But I agree, probably NOT knowing all the details ahead of time will make for a more gripping story @AmyG @AllDebooks @Chelsea.Poole @SamAnne @mcctrish - glad you‘re joining in @JamieArc 💜 1mo

AllDebooks @Cinfhen Wow, what an opening chapter!!! We're in for a treat. Defo a departure from her usual style of writing. I'm completely invested, already. 😍 Having read DC, my advice would be to avoid Dickens until after Copperhead. I'm going to read it but later in the month. Just because it's the 1st Dickens I ever read as a child, so I do have a soft spot for it. 1mo
